Karuizawa bakery with unique breads
Karuizawa has been visited by foreigners as a summer resort since the Meiji era. Bread culture was nurtured there from early on, and many bakeries still exist today. From natural bakeries that use natural yeast to bakeries that are popular with families, here are some of our carefully selected stores.
1sioru bakery
Sold out by reservation a month in advance.
A small bakery in the Shinano Oiwake area. Their signature bread is so popular that it sells out by reservation a month in advance. The dough is made in a complex process over a period of three days, and then carefully baked. The owner, who trained at bakeries in Tokyo and Kyoto for many years, is particular about "subtractive bread making. By thoroughly controlling the processes of fermentation, ripening, and enzymatic decomposition, he creates a unique, chunky texture from a simple formula of dough. If you are lucky enough to obtain a loaf of bread, please enjoy its deep flavor with a thick slice of toast and nothing else.
Excellent melon bread, cheese curry bread, and other delicatessen breads
All items except for the bread can be purchased on the same day. If you find it in the store, you should definitely try the melon bread. The contrast between the crispy outside and chewy inside is irresistible. Cheese curry bread is also popular, and you can enjoy the authentic spice flavor. The owner is particular about "making only what can be made every day. Therefore, during the summer tourist season, after opening at 9:00 a.m., the bakery may be sold out and closed by noon. We recommend that you visit in the morning.

7Karuizawa Kitchen Rotary Store
The former Mikasa Hotel in Karuizawa was established in 1906. At that time, the hotel was used by many business people and cultural figures, and was in operation until 1970 (Showa 45). It is now a national important cultural property and a tourist attraction.
The "Mikasa Curry Revival Project" reproduced the Western-style curry served at the former Mikasa Hotel. Several restaurants are participating in the project, hoping to revitalize the town by giving tourists a taste of Karuizawa's history. Among them is the Mikasa Hotel Curry Bread, which has been a big hit since it was launched at this store in the center of the old Karuizawa Ginza Street.
Secret curry made with herb chicken and vegetables simmered together
The crispy bread is filled with a secret curry sauce made from Shinshu herb chicken and vegetables, and is truly succulent. There is often a line and the bread is always deep-fried frequently so it is always served warm.
Also popular is the Mikasa Hotel Curry & French Fries, a curry dip served with French fries. Likewise, the "Mikasa Hotel Blend Coffee," which reproduces the taste of the old Mikasa Hotel, is also popular.
Since the store specializes in takeout, many people take it home as a souvenir, or you can enjoy it on the Shinkansen bullet train, bus, or in the car.
