Lords and literary figures have fallen in love with this place. Recommended sightseeing spots in Asama Hot Spring

Sengen Onsen, located in an area known as the "back seat" of Matsumoto City, is a hot spring that has been gushing for more than 1,300 years. It has been a favorite of literary figures such as the lord of Matsumoto Castle, Shiki Masaoka, and Akiko Yosano. The area is also rich in historical sites and gourmet spots, so you can enjoy sightseeing while soaking in the hot spring. We will introduce some of the sightseeing spots, such as historic soba noodle shops and souvenir shops, which are visited by both local residents and foreigners.

Founded in 1894, "Teuchisoba Arupusu" offers artisanal soba noodles made by the fourth-generation owner. A popular menu item is the "Yamabiko Set," which allows you to compare three types of soba: juwari soba, nihachi soba, and mizu soba. The mizu-soba is made from the finest brown buckwheat (the raw berries as harvested), which is coarsely ground on a stone mortar to give it a refined flavor.

There are three ways to eat it. Soak the soba in a little bit of water to enjoy its throat and aroma, eat the soba with salt on chopsticks, and savor the sweet taste. Soba-tsuyu is a spicy sauce that enhances the sweetness of the soba. You can enjoy soba the way you like it.

The interior of the store has a Japanese serenity.

The restaurant has both tatami room and table seating with a view of the well-kept Japanese garden at the back of the restaurant.
Since foreign tourists also visit the restaurant, the menu is written in English and includes information such as "Why drink Sobayu" and "Origin of Nihachi Soba".

From the observatory (850 meters above sea level), which is about a 40-minute trek from the center of Asama hot spring, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the mountains of the Northern Alps and Matsumoto Plain.
There are three main routes to the observatory: from the Gotenyama trailhead, which has a relatively gentle path (30 minutes); from the side path of the Gojiki Shrine (45 minutes); and from the Yakushido area (40 minutes). The Ogasawara family mausoleum, which is related to the lord of Matsumoto Castle, Yakushido Shrine, Gotenyama Tenmangu Shrine, and other historical sites, as well as places famous for their autumn foliage, make this an enjoyable spot.

A walking course that takes you to historical sites

The course, which begins near Yakushido Hall, leads visitors through a red torii gate next to Yakushido Hall and up a steep flight of stone steps to Gotenyama Tenmangu Shrine in a forest of pine trees. In 1659, in the early Edo period (1603-1868), Mizuno Tadatada, then lord of Matsumoto Castle, renovated the Asama Goten (a bathhouse for the lord of Matsumoto Castle) and invited Sugawara no Michizane as a guardian deity, preserving the architectural style of the shrine buildings of the early Edo period. This route allows visitors to experience Matsumoto's history and nature.

Miyajima Shoten is the only shop that sells "oshinko mochi," a typical local confectionery of Asama hot spring that has been handed down since the Meiji era. The production of oshinko mochi ceased during the war and disappeared, but Miyajima Shoten's predecessor revived it, and it has been sold to this day.

The mochi are made with rice flour (joshinko) ground from white rice, and the crane motif is a good omen. Other hot spring buns and souvenirs are also available.
