 9 Specialty Souvenirs of Atami Recommended

Atami is a hot spring resort that can be reached in a day trip from Tokyo, and there are many local specialties to choose from. Here we introduce nine souvenirs, ranging from the tastes of long-established specialty stores in Atami, which is blessed with a wealth of seafood, to gems born from the history of the hot spring resort, as well as hidden gems.

This long-established shop has been in business as a dried fish shop since the Edo period and has been in business for over 150 years. Currently, the fifth generation owner visits the market every day and purchases fish that he is convinced by his own discernment to make dried fish. The production process is also carried on with traditional techniques and is additive-free. The skill in handling fish passed down from generation to generation and the perfect amount of salt from the sun are the skills and seasoning that only a long-established business can provide.

The store specializes in dried fish, with more than 30 varieties of local products such as horse mackerel, barracuda, and snapper on display at any given time. Among them, the most popular is the dried horse mackerel. The additive-free light-salt dried fish is made using only "Kakitagawa spring water" from the melting snow in Fuji, which is selected as one of the 100 best waters, and sun-dried salt. Homemade anchovies are also a popular item.

When you think of Atami, you think of Kamatsuru! Kamatsuru is a store that cannot be missed as a souvenir. All dried fish are really delicious. In addition to the main store, you can also purchase dried fish at "Ruska" in the Atami Station Building.

Since the establishment of Atami's Honke Tokiwagi, "Hyakunen Yokan" has been the signature product for over 100 years. In addition to the standard yokans such as chestnut, azuki, green tea, and plum, atamikan is available in summer and yuzu in winter. Among them, the Honnerenga Yokan is manufactured using domestically produced agar and azuki beans, which spreads the original gentle flavor and sweetness of azuki beans, and its simplicity conveys the craftsman's skill and tradition.
Other yuzu, green tea, and ume yokan products are also made with safe, high-quality domestic ingredients, and are packaged by hand with cellophane, a method that has remained unchanged for a hundred years.

Stately storefront befitting a long-established store

Since its establishment in 1918 (Taisho 7), this Japanese confectionery has faithfully upheld the traditional methods and flavors handed down from the first generation. The store's staff uses ingredients carefully selected by their own eyes and palates, and no preservatives or other additives are used. Even today, the shop continues to produce simple, traditional Japanese confections.

The staff at the store is very kind and will explain you everything when you ask for a recommendation. The yokan is, of course, delicious, but the kibimochi is also delicious and highly recommended!

Miki Seika" is a confectionery store established in 1948. The store's famous cookies, "Cat's Tongue," are popular not only among locals but also tourists. The name "Cat's Tongue" comes from its light and crispy texture, which resembles the feel of a kitten's tongue when put in the mouth. The only ingredients are fresh butter, eggs, sugar, and flour. The taste has remained unchanged for nearly 70 years since its establishment.

The "Neko no tongu" (cat's tongue) is made with lots of butter and eggs and has a crispy texture! The packaging is also retro and cute, making it a perfect souvenir. However, they are fragile, so please be a little careful when taking them home. There is also a "mini cat" in a box.

There is also a branch on the first floor of the Ekimae Daiichi Building near Atami Station, making it convenient for those using the train to purchase here.

This is the signature product of Hoteiya, a local bakery that has been a favorite since its establishment in 1947. The unique texture of the soft and fluffy surface and moist and chewy inside has become so addictive that it has become so popular that it is said that "there is no one in Atami who does not know about it.
The reason for its popularity is the wide variety, including koshian (red bean paste), kabocha (pumpkin), and chocolat (chocolate), and when seasonal limited editions are included, there are approximately 14 varieties in total. Each flavor has its own sauce kneaded into the dough in a spiral shape, creating a simple sweet taste that spreads in the mouth.

The steamed buns with chestnuts are especially popular and disappear quickly. The fluffy texture and nostalgic flavor are often eaten by Staff/staff members as a snack, breakfast, or lunch.

The business was temporarily closed for various reasons, but in 2007, in response to fans' requests for a revival, it reopened as Atami Hoteiya in the Maxvalu Atami store. While major companies came forward, Maxvalu Tokai took over the business at the owner's request, saying, "It's a taste of Atami, so we want a local company to take over the business. Staff/staff members who worked at the original store have been transferred to the new store, and they have recreated not only the ingredients but also the kitchen of "Hoteiya" to keep the old-fashioned taste of the past.

Coffee jelly" is a combination of jelly made with coffee brewed with freshly ground beans and sweet bean paste. The bean paste is made exclusively for the "Coffee Jelly" at 2:00 a.m. every day, and its sweetness is adjusted to match the bitterness of the coffee. When you mix the jelly with the bean paste spread on the bottom of the mini cup, the sweetness and bitterness will spread in your mouth with just the right amount of sweetness and bitterness. Adding cream to taste is also recommended for a more mellow taste.

The combination of bittersweet coffee, sweet bean paste, and cream is an indescribable balance. We also recommend the "Dainagon Zenzai" because of its delicious red bean paste.

One of the most popular souvenirs in hot spring resorts is the onsen manju. Now sold all over Japan, it is said to have originated in Atami's Enmeido.
Hot spring Enmeido buns come in two varieties: brown buns made with brown sugar from Okinawa and white buns made with koshian (sweetened red bean paste) and white honey. The simple taste has been loved by great writers who have villas in Atami.

The birthplace of hot spring buns

The first owner of the store came up with the idea of steaming manju buns in a hot spring in the early Taisho period (1912-1926). The name "onsen enmei manju" (hot spring life extension bun) was given to pray for the health and prolongation of life of the hot spring cure customers and for the development of the hot spring resort.

Dairy Kingdom Orache is located in the lush Tanna Basin at an altitude of about 250 meters above sea level, and is a Property where visitors can experience dairy farming and enjoy gourmet food made from fresh local ingredients. Its soft ice cream and butter made with freshly squeezed raw milk from the adjacent Katano Farm, as well as cheese from Minami Hakone, are popular among tourists.
Recommended as a souvenir is "Miruku Okara Chippusu. It is a snack made by kneading full-fat powdered milk from Tanna milk, a brand milk of this area, and okara (bean curd), sprinkled with powder of various flavors, and deep-fried. The cheese flavor is popular among children, while the wasabi mayonnaise flavor is popular among adults as a snack with beer.

White chocolate board

Like "Miruku Okara Chippusu," this rich-tasting milk chocolate is made with full-fat milk powder from "Tanna Milk" and is popular as a souvenir.

Ham house Grimm, a ham and sausage specialty store, is located about 20 minutes by car from Atami in the direction of Mishima. Recommended are sausages such as the gold medal-winning "Frankfurter" and "German Wiener. Salt is imported from Alpensalz rock salt in Germany, and all the flavorings are imported from the real Germany. The website also includes information on how to cook the sausages in a delicious way.

The "Ham house Grimm" has a lineup of excellent products, nine of which won gold medals at a meat processing contest held in Germany in 2000.
The German flag flying in the parking lot makes it easy to spot the store from a distance.

Located on a hilltop near Izuyama Shrine, this fresh fish store is a hidden gem for those in the know. Inside the store you will find not only fresh seafood from Izuyama Port, but also homemade dried fish, handmade side dishes, and more.

If you buy fresh fish, they will grate it on the spot and make you a bowl of pickled seafood (no food or drink allowed inside the restaurant). The seasonal local fish and other items are sold at surprisingly reasonable prices, making it one of the best places to buy local fish in Atami.

This is a hole-in-the-wall spot that I really don't want to tell you about. The fresh fish is superb! I regularly go here on my days off to enjoy their freshly pickled seafood bowls....please come up the 832 steps to Izuyama Shrine and buy some fresh fish on your way to Izuyama Shrine.
