A historic shrine that continues to protect Atami's hot springs

Oyu, which is said to be the source of Atami's hot springs, springs in front of the shrine. The shrine is said to have been built in Tempyo 749 (Tempyo 21), when a god told the shrine that there was a hot spring that was effective in removing illnesses. Since then, the shrine has been revered not only by the general public but also by court nobles and shoguns as the guardian of the hot springs in Atami. Tokugawa Ieyasu was so pleased with the efficacy of Atami hot springs that he had the source dedicated to Edo Castle during the reign of the fourth Ietsuna, and festivals called "Yukumi-michimichi" and "Yu-matsuri" are held at the shrine.

The shrine is inscribed with the names of the ryokans that have dedicated their hot spring ryokans, giving visitors a sense of the history of the hot spring ryokan area, which has been enhanced by numerous ryokans.
