Since its release in 1961, "Eel Pie" has been an ever-popular souvenir of Hamamatsu. The ingredients for the dough are quite simple: flour, butter, water, and secret eel powder. The dough is then baked, and finally coated with the secret sauce to complete the product. The crispy, mouthwatering dough is made up of approximately 9,000 layers and is delicate. Therefore, the dough stretching method and oven temperature are fine-tuned according to the daily temperature and humidity. The sauce applied at the end contains garlic, which is rarely used in pastries, but beyond that, it is a top secret even within the company. Only a few eel pie artisans have inherited the taste, which has been passed down from generation to generation and has never been seen outside the company.

Also, at the Eel Pie Café, the menu features unique flavors of eel pie that can only be tasted here, such as the "Eel Pie V.S.O.P. Eel tsukudani (boiled down boiled eel food): Unagi jieunagi (eel) 1,512 yen and up (45 g and up per bag)

For more than 60 years since its establishment, this eel specialty store has sold kabayaki (broiled eel), shiroyaki (grilled eel), tsukudani (food boiled in soy sauce), and more. Recommended as an easy souvenir is the tsukudani, a tsukudani of eel that is an excellent accompaniment to rice. Carefully selected live eels are used, and after going through the processes of shiroyaki, deep steaming, and kabayaki, they are quickly boiled. Therefore, it is characterized by its low salt content and the original flavor of the eel. The secret of its popularity is that the eel is so tender that you can easily cut through to the skin when you put your chopsticks in.
Deep steamed eel cooked with sansho (Japanese pepper) in a sweet sauce is a perfect accompaniment to alcoholic drinks. There are also a total of four other varieties, including "Unagi sansho tsukudani (eel stewed with sansho) with sweet and spicy grains of sansho.

Second generation honey 750 yen and up (200g and up)

Mikkaichi, located on the northern shore of Lake Hamana, is a scenic area rich in nature, and its mild climate allows the cultivation of mandarin oranges to flourish. Nagasaka Apiary has been operating an apiary in this area for over 80 years, with three generations of parents and children. While there is a wide variety of honey available, ranging from honey collected on the family farm to the finest honey from around the world, the "second generation honey" has been a long seller. This is an original blend of honey created by Mitsuo Nagasaka, the second generation, based on his many years of experience. It is a blend of honey from acacia flowers and mandarin orange flowers in the optimum proportions. Fruity and elegantly sweet, it is a versatile type of honey that goes well with toast and yogurt, as well as coffee and tea.

Mikan monaka: 799 yen (4 pieces)

Mikkaichi is famous for its mandarin oranges. The "Mikan-michinaka" from Irikawaya, a long-established bakery established in 1885, is an excellent product that lavishly uses Mikan-mikan, a local delicacy. Inside the light and fragrant monaka is a rich bean paste made of Habutae rice cake flour, Hokkaido white beans, and Otebomame beans, kneaded with fresh and fragrant Mikan (mandarin orange). The use of no coloring to create the mandarin color is another example of the skill of this long-established shop.
Irikawaya, now run by the fifth generation, sells a variety of Japanese and Western-style confections using carefully selected ingredients, including azuki beans from Nakayabu Farm in Obihiro, Hokkaido, as well as flour, sugar, and eggs, all of which are carefully selected by the baker. The "Mikka-mikan soft serve ice cream" is a must-try when you visit the store. It has a rich flavor with the juice of Mikan mandarins concentrated to five times its original volume.

Marugoto mikan daifuku: 300 yen

Mikkaichi mikan has a deep flavor with a hint of sourness amidst its high sugar content. Mikkaichi Confectionery's "Marugoto Mikan Daifuku", which sells 20,000 units a year, is the best way to enjoy this Hamamatsu specialty in its entirety. It is extremely difficult to wrap a mikan full of juice in a rice cake. The product is made by peeling Mikagaichi mandarin oranges, soaking them in syrup, wrapping them in homemade white bean paste, and wrapping them in soft hujie rice cakes.
The product is sold frozen, and can be enjoyed when the mochi is half defrosted and soft. When half defrosted, the crispy texture is irresistible, and when fully defrosted, the flavor of juicy mandarin oranges dipped in honey will fill your mouth.
Mikka Seika also sells "Mikan-no-sato," a famous confectionery made with Mikan (mandarin orange), a wide variety of manju (buns), dorayaki (pancakes), and more.
