Six new and old Hamamatsu sweets that the locals love and that represent Hamamatsu.
Hamamatsu is home to a wide variety of sweets, both old and new, Japanese and Western, including Daifuku, a sweet made from fresh fruit and arranged around the famous mandarin oranges. We also introduce some of Hamamatsu's other popular sweets stores, including a long-established store that pioneered cheesecake and a famous baumkuchen store that is famous throughout the country.
1Jiichiro Oheidai Honten
Jiichiro first appeared in 2002 and quickly came into the limelight. Said to have changed the concept of baumkuchen up until then, Jiichiro's baumkuchen is a gem of a baumkuchen, made up of 24 ultra-thin layers that never leave the bakery, not even for a moment. The sweet and gentle flavor that spreads in the mouth attracts many people and has gained a growing number of fans.
Today, the company has many stores in commercial properties in Shizuoka Prefecture, as well as in the Kanto and Kansai areas. The main store in the suburbs of Hamamatsu City, which is also the origin of the bakery, offers not only baumkuchen, but also pudding, roll cakes, rusks, and other standard products, as well as limited-edition items, making it a worthwhile place to visit.
The famous baumkuchen tastes even better with the café menu!
The "Jiichiro Ohpeidai Honten" has a café space. The café has a retro atmosphere with its impressive red upholstered chairs and dark brown latticework on the walls and floor, creating a very cozy atmosphere. Here, you can enjoy sweets made from Jiichiro's baumkuchen with coffee made from ice-aged beans brewed in a siphon. The freshly cut baumkuchen is served with fresh cream and blueberry jam, and together they are so delicious that you can't help but smile when you taste them. A variety of other sweets are also on the menu, including a "roll cake set" and a "freshly baked crisp apple pie set.

2Marutaya May-one Ekimachi Store
The Marutaya Confectionary Shop, which has been making western-style confections in Hamamatsu since 1949, began selling cheesecakes in 1964, the year of the Tokyo Olympics. The cheesecake, with a flavor that has remained unchanged for more than 50 years, is made up of three layers. On top of the crispy cookie dough, there is a rich cream cheese made from Danish cheese, and on top of that is sour cream with a refreshing sour taste, creating an amazing balance of richness and sourness. In addition, the cookie dough is made from a specially blended dough of another Marutaya specialty, Agedashiro cookies.
Box-type cheesecake as a souvenir
Marutaya has five stores in Hamamatsu City, but if you want to take some home as souvenirs, the most convenient place is the Marutaya Meiwan Ekimachi Store on the first floor of Meiwan, located in JR Hamamatsu Station, across from the ticket office for conventional trains. The shop sells a variety of products, including its signature cheesecake, Agetoshio cookies, roll cakes, and baked goods.
Recommended is the "Cheese Box," which combines three layers of crispy cookie dough, baked cheesecake, and sour cream. This easy-to-carry rectangular cheesecake, designed as a souvenir, has been a firm favorite for more than 10 years. The mouth-watering aroma and flavor of the cheese is combined with sour cream to create an exquisite taste. It has a refreshing aftertaste and is delicious all the way through.
3Wagashidokoro Shizuhana
Despite its location on the edge of the Kanzanji hot spring resort area, in an alley near the shore of Lake Hamana, the store is known as a famous Japanese confectionery that draws a long line of customers. Visitors are attracted by the "Strawberry Drops," which are sold in limited quantities from December to the end of March. It is a masterpiece of strawberry paste with a whole "Akihime" cherry blossom wrapped in gyuhi (a Japanese sweet made from rice flour). The sweet and sour taste of the strawberries and the light sweetness of the strawberry red bean paste are exquisite, and you can eat as many as you like.
The popular item is so popular that even though about 1,000 are sold each day, they are sold out, and people even line up from 7:00 a.m. during the sales period. To ensure that you can get your hands on such "Strawberry Drops," it is recommended that you make an advance reservation starting one month in advance according to your travel schedule.
Compare the taste of classic Japanese sweets to see how good they are!
Outside of the "Strawberry Drop" sales period, from June to November, the main sweet is "Grape Whispering," which is made of grapes such as grape and muscat, wrapped in white bean paste and gyuuhi (Japanese sweet bean paste). The juicy grapes, soft Gyuhi, and light red bean paste are a perfect match.
In addition to the limited-time-only items, there are also a wide variety of rice cakes and dumplings, such as "mame daifuku" and "mitarashi dango. Why not take a stroll in Kanzanji hot spring and enjoy a comparison of Japanese sweets?

4Montagne Ishihara-ten
The cake store was established in 1963 in Yuraku-gai, the center of Hamamatsu City. Today, there are five stores in Hamamatsu City and Iwata City. Along with its signature fruit-filled cakes, the "Hamamatsu Rusk" is a long-seller. French bread specially made for rusks is sliced to a perfect thickness, coated with fermented butter, dipped in granulated sugar, and baked. Every step of the process is handmade, and the crispiness of the rusk is exquisite. You can taste and compare about 15 flavors, including plain, cheese, sesame, and Hamanako nori (laver), at the store.
Also, every Friday and Sunday, the Ishihara and Hamakita stores offer a "cake buffet," where customers can order two cut cakes of their choice and a drink as a set for only 756 yen. 5Japanese/Western confectionery Irikawaya Mikkaichi honten
Founded in 1885, Matsuzaki Jinsaku is a long-established bakery. The first generation of Matsuzaki Jinsaku started making manjuu (steamed buns) in Yotsujizaka, Mikkaicho, and they are still popular among local people as "Jinsaku Manjuu", the store's standard flavor.
Currently, the fifth generation runs the main store located by Okuhamana Lake. They are more particular about the ingredients they use, such as azuki beans from Nakayabu Farm in Obihiro, Hokkaido, naturally grown rice from Noken in Iwata City, Ena chestnuts, and Naruto kintoki. Furthermore, in making Western-style confections, they are under the guidance of Swiss confectionery master Wolfgang Paul Gotze, who produces high-quality confections in both Japanese and Western styles.
Local specialty tangerines as confections!
Among the many products, Irikawaya's signature product and one that has been popular for 60 years is "Mikan monaka" (mandarin orange cake). Mikagaoka is Shizuoka's representative mandarin orange production area. This local specialty is lavishly used in this product. The light and fragrant "monaka" type is filled with fresh, fragrant, and gently tasting mandarin bean paste. The use of no coloring to produce the mandarin orange color is another example of the skill of a long-established bakery.
The store is also eager to develop new products, and the "Mikka Mikan Soft Ice Cream" is a must-try when you visit the store. The rich flavor of the ice cream is popular among cyclists who enjoy riding along the lakeside.

6San Rafael, Entetsu Department store
For more than 20 years, the main store has been located in a lush suburb of Hamamatsu City. The "Saint-Raphaël" has become well established locally as a famous French confectionery store. The same lineup of fresh confections, baked doughnuts, breads, chocolates, and other sweets as the main store are available at the "Saint-Raphaël Entetsu Department Store" on the basement floor of the Entetsu Department Store in front of Hamamatsu Station, where you can easily purchase the same reputable taste.
The "Tenshi no Cream Puff" boasts a steady popularity and is often introduced in the local media. The crispy puff pastry is filled with a fluffy custard cream. When you take a bite of the cream, you will be filled with the fresh aroma of vanilla beans and the elegant sweetness of the cream. The rich yet refreshing aftertaste will keep you coming back for more.
Challenging new genres and styles
In addition to our regular products, we also put a lot of effort into developing new products that are full of originality.
The "Funny Candy Series" has been attracting attention as a unique product. These sweets are made in the shape of Hamamatsu's famous gyoza (dumplings), unaju (eel stew), katsudon (pork cutlet bowl), kaisendon (seafood bowl), and ramen noodles, and are skillfully reproduced using roll cake, marzipan, chocolate, Mont Blanc, and other ingredients. They have earned a reputation not only for their appearance, but also for their deliciousness, which only a French pastry store can offer. Its unexpectedness makes it a perfect souvenir.
Also popular is the "Hamamatsu Yaki Doughnut Tenshi no Ring," which is carefully baked in an oven without frying in oil, and is characterized by its moist texture and gentle sweetness.
