6Narusawa Ice Cave
A typical lava cave at the foot of Mt. Fuji, covered with ice
Located at the eastern entrance of the Aokigahara Sea of Trees, the Narusawa Ice Cave is one of the representative lava caves at the foot of Mt. The cave got its name from the fact that the average temperature inside is as low as 3 degrees Celsius and it is covered with ice all year round.
The ice cave is 153 m long, and the ceiling height in some places is as low as 91 cm, making it a true natural adventure world where visitors wear helmets and go through the cave.
Inside the cave, there is a lot to see and do.
As you proceed through the cave, you will see a series of highlights, such as the "ice wall," which is a reproduction of an ice storage facility used in the days when there were no refrigerators, the "hell hole," which you cannot see to see how far it goes, and the "lava tunnel. Don't miss the natural icicles that form when drops of water seep through the ceiling and freeze and pile up. Some years, huge icicles as large as 50 cm in diameter and 3 m in height are created.
Since being designated as a natural monument by the Ministry of Education in 1929, this area has been introduced to the world and has become a valuable geological site.
