Mysterious ice world that can be entered even on rainy days

Located at the eastern entrance to the Aokigahara Sea of Trees, Narusawa Ice Cave is one of the representative lava caves at the foot of Mt. It is named after the ice cave because the average temperature inside is as low as 3 degrees Celsius and it is covered with ice all year round. The ice cave is 153 m long, and its circular pit allows visitors to enjoy the various faces of the cave as they walk around it.

Water sometimes drips from the ceiling inside the cave, so wearing a raincoat is recommended. The volume of water increases especially on rainy days, but the sound of the water echoing through the cave is very tasteful. Quietly listening to this sound of water is a unique way to enjoy the cave on rainy days.

Inside the cave, where attractions appear one after another

This is a recreation of the time when it was used as an ice storage facility.
This is a recreation of the time when it was used as an ice storage facility.

The "ice wall" inside the cave is a reproduction of an ice storage facility that was used in the days when there were no refrigerators. Until the middle of the Showa period (1926-1989), a large amount of ice was brought in from the lake during the winter and used as natural storage during the summer.

In addition, natural icicles formed by frozen water drops seeping from the ceiling can be seen until early autumn, with some years producing huge icicles 50 cm in diameter and 3 m high.
The site has been introduced to the world since it was designated as a natural monument by the Ministry of Education in 1929, and has become a valuable place from a geological viewpoint.
