1Tsutsumisha
A selection of cute paper goods, stationery, and daily necessities
A general store run by an owner with an unparalleled passion for paper goods and stationery. Every item packed tightly throughout the store has been personally selected by the owner, ranging from stationery and envelopes to pencils, paper clips, pin badges, and cloth bags.
The owner sources items from both Japan and abroad—things she feels “I want to give to someone,” items that can be used in daily life, and things that are easy to use. Of course, the shop also carries original works by local artists. “I want you to pick them up, imagine how you’ll use them, and choose based on that,” says the owner. The appeal lies not only in the items themselves but also in the thrill of discovery.
A nostalgic space that makes the most of the best of the past
The shop is housed in a building the owner renovated herself, which was originally used as a taxi company office. Her goal was to create “a place people want to come back to.” Exposed beams and floorboards with a patina of age, along with well-worn fixtures, have been left as-is, creating a nostalgic atmosphere that feels as though time has stood still.
At the back of the store is a small café with just four seats, serving soft drinks such as “coffee” and “ginger milk tea.” It attracts not only regulars but also many people who drop by on a whim while out for a drive.

It’s said that many people even make special trips from as far away as Hiroshima and Fukuoka prefectures to purchase these items.
A wide variety of tableware is on display. Be sure to feel the texture
“Matsukozan’s tableware exists to serve the food it holds,” says the third-generation designer, who is meticulous about ensuring that every aspect—from shape and pattern to texture—complements the cuisine.Because everything is made by hand, the "shinogi" ridge patterns created with scrapers and planes, as well as the variations in shade resulting from the application of glaze, vary from piece to piece, giving each vessel its own unique character.
Since you can feel the texture of the pottery, please take your time to find the piece that fits your hand best. Additionally, Hagi ware changes color and gains character with use. Nurturing your pottery through daily use is another way to enjoy it.

6Gallery JIBITA
A wide selection of works by renowned artists from across Japan, featuring mainly young artists
An art gallery that exhibits and sells carefully curated works, including Hagi ware as well as ceramics, glass, and woodwork from all over Japan. The owner, born into a family of art dealers and exposed to art from a young age, opened this space to preserve the gradually declining culture of Hagi ware and to attract more fans of ceramics.
While the gallery focuses on works by young artists, the owner personally inspects every piece—seeing it with his own eyes, touching it with his own hands, and selecting only those that truly move him. Since he often travels to visit the artists in person, it’s best to check in advance if the gallery is open before visiting from a distance.
A place to discover captivating works and artists. Solo exhibitions are held about nine times a year
The pristine white gallery showcases a collection of masterpieces that have become the talk of the town among enthusiasts. It’s said that many people make the trip from the city specifically because “these pieces are hard to come by in the city center.”
In addition to the permanent collection, the gallery hosts approximately nine special exhibitions each year.Featuring Hagi-yaki potter Eiichi Shibuya, glass artist Mami Tokizawa, and ceramic artist Ryuji Iwasaki, among others, these exhibitions are scheduled to take place once a month in 2022, and the calendar is filling up through 2026. If you’re planning an art-filled trip to Hagi City or Nagato City in Yamaguchi Prefecture, this is definitely a must-visit spot.
