Hirosaki City is the center of Tsugaru region spreading in the western part of Aomori Prefecture. The city flourished as a castle town in the Edo period (1603-1867), and after the Meiji period (1868-1912), it adopted Western culture, and valuable Japanese and Western architecture can still be seen today. Hirosaki City is also Japan's largest producer of apples. The variety of apple specialties, including sweets, cuisine, and souvenirs, as well as the experience of harvesting apples, make Hirosaki a great sightseeing destination.
Hot spring ryokan "KAI Tsugaru" located in Owani Hot spring ryokan, the backwaters of Hirosaki, is a hot spring ryokan where you can enjoy the traditional culture of Tsugaru and the seasonal atmosphere of the city. We will introduce you to a 2-day and 1-night trip to Tsugaru, where you can enjoy a live Tsugaru shamisen performance, experience the traditional craft of Tsugaru kogin sashimi, and so much more.

For lunch on the first day, you will visit "Fujita Memorial Garden," a Japanese garden and villa of Kenichi Fujita, a businessman from Hirosaki City. The "Taisho Roman Café" in the garden is a café using the hall and sunroom of the villa's Western-style house built in 1921. The glass-enclosed terrace seats offer a view of the garden, and the stained glass windows, chandeliers, and other decorations of the time are fascinating.
For meals, we recommend the beef curry with apples produced in Hirosaki and the galette made with buckwheat flour produced in Nishimeya Village, known for the World Heritage Site Shirakami Sanchi. For dessert, try Hirosaki's famous apple pie. Six to seven varieties are available, including those from popular sweets stores and apple farms in the city, so it is a pleasure to compare them.

Visit the park famous for its cherry blossoms and autumn leaves
The Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival is usually held from late April to early May. Don't miss the "flower rafts" that fill the moat with scattered petals!
After lunch, take a walk around Hirosaki's representative spots. Hirosaki Park, adjacent to the Fujita Memorial Garden, is based on Hirosaki Castle, the residence of the Tsugaru clan that ruled the area during the feudal era. In spring, the park is one of the most famous cherry blossom viewing spots in Japan with approximately 2,600 cherry trees in bloom, and the "Hirosaki Sakura Festival" attracts many tourists. In addition, seasonal events such as the "Chrysanthemum and Autumn Foliage Festival" in autumn and the "Snow Lantern Festival" in winter are held. Visitors can enjoy the spectacular view throughout the four seasons.
Hirosaki Castle was built in 1611. The castle tower, three turrets, and five gates that remain today are designated as national important cultural properties. The spacious park also has a botanical garden (fee not included) and a rest area, so why not take your time to explore the sights?

Owani Onsen was called "Gyoji," a title higher than yokozuna in the national ranking of hot springs in the Edo period. Your skin will be moist after bathing!
Aomori hiba (cypress) bathtubs are filled with the famous Owani hot spring. The thick, rich water has been used for medical treatment since ancient times. From fall to spring, enjoy bathing in the "apple bath" with apples floating in the water, and in summer, enjoy bathing with "hiba apples" made of Aomori hiba (cypress). The sight of the apples floating in the water is quite charming.

The second day of the festival will start with the local gymnastics "Tsugaru Taiso. This original exercise is based on Tsugaru's seasonal customs, such as the Hirosaki Neputa Festival and the harvesting of apples. The exercise will help you to move your whole body and relax your body, and start the day with a refreshed feeling.

Miso soup is made with local miso fermented and aged in the hot springs of Owani Onsen. A bowl of soup that will soak into your body in the morning.
For breakfast, an apple-based local juice and a Japanese-style meal full of local delicacies await you. The famous "shellfish miso" is a local dish of scallop meat seasoned with miso and dipped in egg. The savory smell and rich flavor of this dish will keep you coming back for more.

You can choose from eight different colors of threads, including "Shirakami" and "apple," all of which are associated with Tsugaru. There are also instructions on how to make them.
During your stay, you can enjoy the Tsugaru Kogin Sashimi Experience "Memories Kogin" at the Travel library on the lobby floor at any time. A set of paper "bookmark making" arranged to be easy to make is available, and the completed bookmarks can be taken home as souvenirs.

Looking for souvenirs in a park with apple fields
Against the backdrop of Mt. Iwaki, the scenery of white apple blossoms in spring and red and yellow berries in fall is like a painting.
On the second day, we will visit a spot unique to Hirosaki City, Japan's largest apple producer. The 9.7-hectare garden is planted with 2,300 apple trees of 80 varieties, and visitors can enjoy the experience of harvesting the apples from early August to early November. The "Apple House" in the park offers a wide variety of about 1,200 apple-related products, such as apple sweets, apple juice, and cider, a sparkling apple liquor. Seasonal apples are available throughout the year, making it a great place to pick up souvenirs.
Other points of interest include the "Former Koyamauchi Family Residence," a reconstructed farmhouse from the Edo period, and the "Mount Suribachi Observatory," which offers a panoramic view of the park and Mount Iwaki. There is also a grassy picnic area where visitors can relax.

Hirosaki City is known as a "French town" where French restaurants compete with each other for the best French cuisine, as Western culture penetrated the city after the Meiji period (1868-1912). Restaurant Yamazaki is one of the most famous restaurants in Hirosaki City, and continues to be a leader in Hirosaki French cuisine. Ingredients are carefully selected and include meat, seafood, and vegetables grown in Aomori Prefecture. Many people come from far and wide to enjoy the safe and secure slow food that makes the most of the ingredients.
Recommended for lunch is the "Hirosaki French Option Course," which includes hors d'oeuvre, soup, main dish, and dessert, which can be selected from several choices. A must-try for soup is the chilled soup made with "Miracle Apples" and other ingredients grown without pesticides or fertilizers by Hirosaki apple farmer Akinori Kimura. It is a gem with a creamy, rich apple flavor.

Appreciate contemporary art at an art museum that has inherited its history
Inspired by the color of cider, the roof of "Cider Gold" changes its appearance with the reflection of light.

The trip concludes with a visit to the museum, which was renovated from a building built as a sake brewery in the Meiji and Taisho periods and also used as a cider factory. At the entrance, visitors are greeted by "A to Z Memorial Dog," a work by Yoshitomo Nara, a contemporary artist from Hirosaki City.
The building consists of two buildings, an art museum and a café/shop. The art museum presents cutting-edge art from Japan and abroad.
