The Akasaka Hikawa Shrine, a 13-minute walk from OMO3 Tokyo Akasaka by Hoshino Resorts, was built in 1730 by the 8th Shogun, Tokugawa Yoshimune, who built the present shrine. The shrine is one of the ten shrines in Tokyo and is known as a guardian deity for warding off evil spirits and for marriage, and it is rare in Tokyo in that it retains many scenes from the Edo period.
In conjunction with the blooming of cherry blossoms, seasonal red seals called "Sakura mairi" and "Gan no ito mamori," a charm made by a shrine maiden with her whole heart, are distributed. Lord Yoshimune is known to have encouraged the common people to enjoy cherry blossom viewing, and the cherry trees in full bloom at Akasaka Hikawa Shrine carry on his wishes into the present day.
