Moji Port’s Pride: Baked Curry. 7 Must-Visit Restaurants
Moji Port, which flourished as an international trade port, saw the emergence of various dishes that fuse Japanese and Western culinary cultures. One of these is “Baked Curry.”While there are various theories, it is said to have originated in the Showa 30s (1955–1964) at a coffee shop in Moji Port, where leftover curry was baked in the oven gratin-style. Today, it is beloved as a signature local delicacy representing Moji Port.
The basic style involves topping rice with curry, cheese, and an egg, then baking it until golden brown. The rich flavor of the melted cheese and the mildness of the egg bring out the aromatic notes of the spices. More than 30 restaurants line the streets around JR Moji Port Station, each offering its own unique take on the dish. In this article, we’ll introduce seven recommended spots you’ll want to visit when you’re in Moji Port.
1The World’s Only Baked Curry: Princess Pippi Moji Port
An authentic specialty restaurant serving grilled curry based on Thai royal cuisine
A popular spot with a constant line of customers even before opening. The curry sauce is based on Thai royal cuisine, featuring coconut milk, herbs, and spices; it’s characterized by being flour-free and low in fat. A particular favorite is the “Vegetable Sommelier Baked Curry,” limited to 30 servings per day. It’s a colorful dish topped with nearly 10 types of seasonal vegetables.
When your baked curry arrives, crack open the soft-boiled egg hidden in the center. The mellow richness blends with the zing of spices and the aroma of herbs, while the natural sweetness of the vegetables gently ties the whole dish together. Adding the “spicy powder”—made from four types of spices and herbs available on the table—or the house-made pickle “Walnut Takana Genki-zuke” enhances the ethnic flavor and saltiness, letting you enjoy a unique twist on the dish.
Its appeal lies in a menu that transcends national, cultural, and religious boundaries
The restaurant offers over 10 varieties of baked curry, each with its own unique character, such as “Mentaiko Baked Curry” and “Whole Ise Lobster Baked Curry.” There are also options suitable for vegans and Muslims, reflecting the owner’s wish that “people all over the world can enjoy baked curry and find happiness.”
Since all the curry sauces are made from scratch, the restaurant serves only 100 portions of grilled curry per day. It gets particularly crowded on weekends, so we recommend arriving before opening or right when the restaurant opens.
Local Guide
We recommend pairing the Baked Curry with their house-made Moji Port Banana Beer or Banana Tea. These are unique to the birthplace of the traditional banana street vendor culture, and their fruity sweetness perfectly cuts through the lingering spiciness.

Indulge in the restaurant’s signature baked curry and hamburger steak on one plate
This restaurant, known for its baked curry and hamburger steaks, stands out with its vibrant pink exterior. The most popular item is the signature “Hamburger Steak in Baked Curry.” The curry is made by simmering chicken bouillon soup for an extended period and then adding domestic vegetables such as celery, carrots, and onions. The harmonious blend of the vegetables’ gentle sweetness and the chicken’s umami brings out the meaty richness of the 100% domestic beef hamburger steak. It’s a satisfying dish that lets you enjoy both the juicy hamburger steak and the rich, savory baked curry all at once.
A playful space with a pink color scheme
The restaurant used to operate as a pirate-themed restaurant on a ship, but due to the ship’s deterioration, the current location was opened. Some of the decor from the ship-based restaurant days, such as the thatched palm-leaf roof, has been preserved.
