Recommended hot springs and footbaths in Unzen and Obama area, Nagasaki Prefecture

In Unzen, Nagasaki Prefecture, there are hot springs with completely different qualities on the mountain side and the sea side respectively. Unzen hot springs, located in the mountains at an elevation of about 700 m, are characterized by slightly cloudy sulfur springs. On the other hand, the Obama hot spring located near Tachibana Bay is a clear, colorless sodium chloride spring with a source temperature of 105°C, one of the highest in Japan. It also boasts the highest heat release in Japan. Because of the hot springs of Unzen, a summer resort, and Obama, where the salty water warms the body from the core, some locals choose Unzen in the summer and Obama in the winter, depending on the season. Here are some unique one-day hot springs and footbath spots where you can enjoy these two hot springs. Feel free to stop by during your trip.

Full of the mood of a secluded hot spring. Unzen's best hot spring for beautiful skin

In winter, the bathtubs are divided into two types: lukewarm (40-41°C) and hot (44-45°C). First, accustom your body to the lukewarm water, then go to the hot water.

The history of this famous hot spring is long, dating back to 1731 (Kyoho 16). It is said that Shoin Yoshida once visited here.

Opened in 1919 as a public bathhouse, it is now popular among day-trippers as the outside bathhouse of Seiunso in Unzen Hot Spring. The hot spring water gushes out behind the building, creating an atmosphere of a secluded hot spring. 440 tons of hot spring water per day, the highest of any hot spring in Unzen, is poured into the bathtubs freshly after gushing out. The cloudy white water is simple sulfur spring water with a slightly acidic PH of 4.3. After bathing, your skin will be moist and smooth. No wonder hot spring lovers from all over Japan come to Unzen.

You can enjoy the feeling of a small hell even in your own bath.

 Meiyu Kojigoku,
Meiyu Kojigoku," a bath salt that allows you to enjoy the famous hot spring water at home, is also available for 1,550 yen. The fragrance and color are just like those of the Kojigoku hot springs!

Founded in 1937, the restaurant retains the atmosphere of that time. Open from 5:00 a.m., it is an indispensable place for local residents, including fishermen and farmers, many of whom are regular customers in the early morning.

Both men and women have two bathtubs each. Despite the age of the baths, they are well maintained and provide a pleasant atmosphere. The baths are especially beautiful when the morning sun shines into them, enhancing the atmosphere. In the Otakshanyu style, the bathtub's lukewarm and hot water temperatures are set every morning by the regulars themselves. This episode shows that the hot spring is deeply rooted in the lives of the local people.

The emotional atmosphere of the changing rooms is also exceptional. The wooden lockers that have been in use since the establishment of the spa bear witness to its long history. On the wall, you will find a book on the benefits of hot spring baths from the time of the establishment. You can immerse yourself in a nostalgic feeling as if you have time-traveled back to the early Showa period. The owner's desire to preserve the atmosphere of the time of its establishment, while making repairs, can be clearly felt.

Kohama Hot Spring is located closest to the magma pool of Unzen Volcano, which lies beneath Tachibana Bay, and is said to have a source temperature of 105℃. It is the longest footbath in Japan with a total length of 105 meters, named after the temperature of the source.

The footbath continues along Tachibana Bay, a luxurious location where visitors can relax while enjoying the view of the ocean. At sunset, the entire area turns orange, creating a romantic atmosphere. There is also a walking footbath where pebbles embedded in the bottom of the footbath stimulate pressure points on the soles of the feet, and a pet footbath space where you and your dog can enjoy a footbath together, attracting many people on holidays.

Adjacent to the footbath Property is a large steaming kettle, where visitors can bring in their favorite vegetables or seafood and steam them in the steam of the hot spring. Use of the kettle is free, and if you do not have a basket, you can rent one for a fee. Even if you do not bring your own food, you can buy ingredients such as eggs and sweet potatoes at the store.
The source is hot, so its power is immense. Eggs are steamed for 8 to 10 minutes, and sweet potatoes are steamed to the core in about 20 minutes. The steamed ingredients can be tasted while enjoying the footbath. The flavor and sweetness of the ingredients are concentrated and combined with the subtle aroma of sulfur, the food is exceptionally delicious.
