3Original Eel Kabayaki Fukudaya
Eel culture only in Isahaya, which has been preserved for more than 160 years.
The eel culture unique to Isahaya City, Nagasaki Prefecture, is to serve grilled eels steamed in a double-bottomed "rakuyaki" bowl. The restaurant that is said to have established and started serving this unique style is "Ganso Eel Kabayaki Fukudaya," which was established in 1863 at the end of the Edo period (the third year of the Tokugawa Shogunate).
Eels are carefully selected from South Kyushu and are of high quality and fatty. The eel is grilled with a secret sauce made from local soy sauce and sake, and steamed in a bowl, so you can taste the plump meat covered with the fragrance of the sauce. Once you try it, you will be captivated by its deliciousness.
The historical appearance of the restaurant enhances the deliciousness.
The restaurant is located in the Sakae-cho Street arcade in the center of Isahaya City. The current quaint building is a three-story wooden structure built in 1929. When it was first built, it was famous as the tallest building in town. The building is a long stretch from the entrance to the back, and is truly like a bed of eels. Currently, only the first floor is used for seating. The doors, pillars, flooring, and other aspects of the massive structure are reminiscent of the early Showa period, and this historical atmosphere is also an important essence of the restaurant's deliciousness.

8Rokubei Chaya Chizashi branch
Soft and smooth. Local noodles from the Shimabara Peninsula made from sweet potatoes
Rokubei, a local dish made with noodles made from sweet potato flour and served in soup stock, is said to have been invented in 1792 by Rokubei, a feudal lord of Shimabara, to help people suffering from famine after a major eruption of Mount Fugendake, located in the center of the Shimabara Peninsula.
It is served using the traditional method of boiling dough kneaded over a pot of boiling water and placed on a grater, then pushed out by hand. The boiled noodles are glossy and firm. They go well with the aromatic broth made from kelp and shiitake mushrooms.
Enjoy the historical food experience of "Rokubei" in a relaxed atmosphere.
Stepping into the restaurant, you will find a space filled with the warmth of wood, just like a folk art restaurant. In addition to table seating, there is also a private room. One of the charms of the restaurant is that it is decorated with photographs taken by the owner himself, depicting the rich natural scenery of Unzen in each of the four seasons.
Rokubei" was born as an emergency ration and preserved food, but it is delicious as a dish. It is because of its deliciousness that it has been preserved as part of the food culture for over 200 years. Why not try a historical food experience during your trip to Unzen?
