Chikurinji Temple, Mt.

Beautiful gradation of autumn leaves adorning the five-story pagoda and garden

Chikurinji Temple was founded in 724 during the Nara period (710-794). Located on Mount Godaisan, a small mountain in the Kochi Prefectural Urban Park, the temple is well known for its autumn foliage. After passing through the temple gate, the stone-paved approach to the temple is covered with brightly colored maple trees and maples, resembling a golden tunnel.
The majestic five-storied pagoda and the garden, one of the three best gardens in Tosa, are also highlights of the temple. The view of the garden from the Shoin is especially picturesque. The gradation of autumn leaves from green to yellow, orange, and red can be enjoyed within the precincts of the temple, which is possible only at a mountain temple with a difference in elevation of the land.
A stroll through "Megurinomori," a recreation area maintained in the natural surroundings of the western precincts, is also recommended. The stone statue of Buddha enshrined in a stained-glass dome, three ponds with different expressions, wooden and stone bridges, and other atmospheric autumn scenery in the forest can be enjoyed.

The carpet of brocade woven by scattered maple trees is breathtaking

The park is known as a strolling course for local residents, and is a spot that attracts a lot of attention on SNS and other social media. In late November, when autumn deepens, the trees in the park turn from deep yellow to orange, and the entire area is enveloped in fiery red leaves. On a clear autumn day, the sight of the sun shining through the trees is truly photogenic.
In December, when the red and yellow leaves begin to fall, the best time to see the leaves is still to come. The fallen leaves pile up like a carpet, creating a truly beautiful autumnal scene. Walking along the paths is fun as you crunch your way through the leaves, and the sight of children playing with the fallen leaves is heartwarming. The scenery is enchanting only at this time of the year, and you can enjoy it to the fullest.

Kochi Castle

Vividly colored maple trees gracefully adorn the castle tower

Located in the center of Kochi City, Kochi Castle is one of the 12 existing castles with a castle tower dating back to before the Edo period. Kochi Castle, also known as "Takajo" (castle of the hawk), has retained its graceful appearance. The mountain on which the castle stands was called "Ohtakasaka-yama" (Mt. Otakasaka), and some people believe that the "Taka" in the name of the mountain was changed to "Taka" castle.
As October draws to a close, the trees around the castle gradually change their autumnal colors. The bright red maple trees, the green pine trees, and the noble castle tower create a beautiful contrast. The best time to view the rows of ginkgo trees surrounding the castle is usually from mid-November to December. Enjoy a leisurely stroll among the bright yellow groves.
Every day from after sunset to 10:00 p.m., the castle tower is illuminated from "Kochi Park". Enjoy a luxurious time of autumn leaf viewing in the long autumn evenings.

Josai Park

An urban park in the center of Kochi City surrounded by rows of ginkgo trees

This urban park is located on the west side of Kochi Castle. The park is a popular place for citizens to relax, with a ground, a square with playground equipment, a waterfront area with a cool fountain, and a Japanese garden with a large pond.
During the fall foliage season, the rows of ginkgo trees all turn a dazzling yellow, making it a perfect viewing spot. Just taking a leisurely stroll under the blue sky is a refreshing experience. In late fall, when the leaves of the ginkgo trees begin to fall, the maple trees in the garden turn from orange to red, and the scenery is full of emotion and healing.
The Enokuchi River flows by the park, and carp and ducks can be seen swimming peacefully. The autumn foliage of the trees along the streets around the park is also magnificent, making it a great place to stop by before or after a visit to Kochi Castle.

Befu Gorge

Hiking while viewing the valley and clear stream in autumn foliage

Befu Gorge, located at the headwaters of Monobe River in Kenzan National Park, is a dynamic gorge with towering limestone rocks that have been eroded over a long period of time. It is known as a scenic spot where the beauty of nature can be seen from season to season. The scenery is especially spectacular in autumn, when the entire mountain is covered in colorful autumn leaves. Visitors can enjoy strolling around the area while admiring the beauty of the brocade-covered gorge and clear streams.

The two stone statues of bears at the foot of the Shin-Kinkei Bridge and the bright red suspension bridge, which stands out against the autumn leaves, are must-see photo spots along with the autumn scenery. When you get tired of walking, go to the pavilion-style rest area. From here, a spectacular view like a folding screen painting spreads out before your eyes.
