From fresh seafood to barley toro, 6 recommended lunches in Atami
With its fresh fish market, Atami is lined with many seafood restaurants and bustling with tourists and locals alike. In addition to sashimi and tempura, the city is also famous for its wide variety of dried fish. Furthermore, with the mountains of Hakone immediately behind it and continuing to the Izu Peninsula, inland foodstuffs are abundant and include such specialties as yams, wild vegetables, and wasabi (Japanese horseradish). Here are six restaurants where you can enjoy such rich foods of Atami for lunch.
1seafood-yakuzen kamatsuru
Dried fish making with a 150-year tradition
A Japanese-style restaurant run by Atami's long-established "Kamatsuru Hinomono" (dried fish) store. In Atami, where the number of dried fish shops that manufacture their own dried fish has dwindled, the fifth-generation owner still visits the market every day to purchase only the fish that he is satisfied with, and veteran craftsmen make the additive-free dried fish. The thick, local specialty, dried fish can be selected at the adjacent Kamatsuru main store and grilled for a store-bought price, and the menu also includes horse mackerel tataki, sashimi, and other rice bowls and set meals.
Recommended specialty lunch
The most popular item on the menu by word of mouth is the "Godaime-don," which features locally caught horse mackerel as the star of the dish. It is a three-color bowl of rice topped with horse mackerel tataki, grilled dried horse mackerel, and kama-age sakura shrimp, each served on a small bowl of warm rice. Other popular lunch dishes include the "Umisachi Zen," which offers both dried fish and sashimi, and the "Kamatsuru Don," which changes depending on the catch of the fish. In this cozy restaurant with 12 counter seats and 10 seats at a small table, you can enjoy the freshest seafood.
