Enjoy seafood in Sendai area. 5 recommended restaurants for sushi & seafood lunch
Miyagi Prefecture is home to the Sanriku Kinkazanoki Fishing Area, which is included in the Northwest Pacific Fishing Area, one of the three largest fishing areas in the world. Such rich bounty of the sea can be tasted in the Sendai area. In this issue, we will introduce five recommended restaurants to visit for lunch, ranging from a seafood bowl to enjoy at a wholesale market in Shiogama Port, one of the largest tuna landing sites in Japan, to a sushi restaurant where you can stop by casually in front of Sendai Station.
Just a short trip from Sendai.
1Shiogama Marine Products Wholesale Market
Eat up all the fresh fish in Shiogama with your own kaisendon (seafood bowl) made with your favorite ingredients!
A wholesale market where fresh seafood landed at the nearby Shiogama fishing port off the east coast of Sanriku is gathered. The approximately 4,950 m2 area is lined with about 100 stores selling fresh fish and processed salted and dried products, making it one of the largest in the Tohoku region.
One of the most recommended is "My Kaisen-don," a bowl of rice topped with seafood, which you can make by purchasing ingredients of your choice. After you have gathered all the ingredients, go to the "My Kaisen-don" corner and purchase a rice set. After purchasing a rice set and serving it, you are ready to eat. The amount of filleted fish and other ingredients sold for My Kaisendon is enough for 3-4 people to share.
Shiogama's signature bigeye tuna, available only in fall and winter, is a must-try!
Shiogama Port boasts the largest catch of fresh bluefin and bigeye tuna in Japan, and among the bigeye tuna landed between September and December, those that meet strict requirements for freshness and fat content are recognized as "Sanriku Shiogama Higashiimono" brand bigeye tuna. When the season is right, the restaurant sells fillets of fish for kaisen-don (seafood bowl) and chubu-fallen portions, so you can enjoy a variety of parts in small portions at a relatively low price.
The restaurant is open from 6:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on weekdays and 2:00 p.m. on weekends, so it is recommended to wake up early and enjoy breakfast in the lively place.
