From long-established establishments to unique restaurants. 6 recommended dinner spots in Otsuka, Tokyo

Otsuka, where the Tokyo Metropolitan Electric Railway runs and the retro townscape remains, once flourished as a flower district. Today, it is known as a downtown area where unique restaurants with rich personalities gather. Here are some of the recommended dinner spots in Otsuka, including bars that are crowded with local regulars, specialty restaurants where you can drink craft beer, and eateries that offer carefully selected and proudly prepared meat and fish.

Enjoy yakitori and fried chicken

 Assorted Yakitori
Assorted Yakitori" 660 yen (front), "Fried Daisen Dori" 640 yen (back)

A popular kappo restaurant established in 1964. Since its establishment, the restaurant has been particular about the quality of its chicken, and its menu items using Daisen chicken and Jiyotori chicken from Tottori Prefecture are popular among both men and women of all ages.
The "Yakitori Assortment" is a dish in which you can enjoy liver, tsukune (chicken meat), chicken skin, shishito (green pepper), and negima (green onion) all at once. The fresh, juicy, odorless chicken meat is matched with a secret sauce that has remained unchanged since the olden days, making it a perfect accompaniment to alcoholic beverages. We also recommend ordering a bowl of yakitori with white rice. Be sure to try the "Oyama Dori Karaage (deep-fried Oyama Dori)," a large, meaty Oyama Dori that is fried until crispy.

A homey atmosphere that will make you want to come back again and again!

There are counter seats and tatami rooms for a variety of occasions.

The restaurant, which retains the good old days of the Showa period, is run by a father/mother/daughter team and Staff/staff members who have worked there since the restaurant's establishment. Among the wide variety of dishes on the menu, the "Unaju" (eel) dish topped with eel from Kyushu has long been popular. It is recommended when you want to splurge a little.
There are also items on the menu named after customers, such as the "baba-dama" omelette, which was created after a regular customer, Baba, ordered it. Perhaps the secret of the restaurant's popularity for more than 60 years is its at-home atmosphere that values human connections.

We also recommend the Kabu Miso, served from late May through October. Turnips from Nobechi, Aomori Prefecture, are topped with a special blend of miso. It is a dish that goes down a treat with sake.

Cheers to Otsuka's original beer and homemade smoked dishes!

 Assorted smoked meat
Assorted smoked meat" 1,280 yen (front), "Bongo lager" 780 yen (back), which offers three types of meat

The Blue Pub offers homemade beer and smoked dishes. There are always 12 kinds of beer on tap, and the most popular beer is "Bongo Lager," a collaboration with "Bongo," a rice ball specialty restaurant in Otsuka. The beer is made with white rice cooked at Bongo and other ingredients such as kelp and dried bonito flakes, and has a refreshing taste. It has a refreshing taste and is well known for being easy to drink. The "Assorted Smoked Foods" is the perfect accompaniment to this beer. Roast beef, duck, and bacon are smoked over cherry wood, which produces a strong aroma that does not overpower the smell of the meat.

Freshly brewed beer from the brewery

As the first brewery in Toshima Ward, the restaurant has brewed 300 to 400 kinds of beer. The brewery brews with the ingredients of the moment, and about five new products are introduced each month.
In addition to beer, the smoked dishes are also full of attention to detail. Everything from sashimi to desserts and seasonings are smoked in the restaurant from scratch. The "finishing TKG (egg on rice)" and "grilled rice balls" made with homemade smoked soy sauce are perfect for wrapping up after a night of drinking.
Beer and food can also be taken out, so we recommend taking it back to your hotel to enjoy.

Spice curry, a hidden specialty of Yakiton-ya, is a must-try!

 Spice Curry
Spice Curry" is 500 yen, containing a block of pork belly stewed for 3-4 hours (meat changes daily). Rice is an additional 100 yen.

Yakiton restaurant was established in 1950. In addition to the "yakiton" (grilled pork belly), such as tongue and pork cutlets, which have been served since the establishment of the restaurant, the "spice curry" created by the third-generation owner over a period of more than two years is a gem known by those in the know. The authentic curry is made with a mixture of 10 spices, including cumin, cardamom, and coriander, purchased from local foreign grocery stores, and is served with pork, chicken, or beef, depending on the day. Many people enjoy the spiced curry as a snack with their drinks. If you order extra rice, homemade achar (Indian pickles) is served with it.

Enjoy a glass while watching the food being prepared!

The quaint restaurant, built in 1965, has a U-shaped counter seating area. The U-shaped counter seats allow customers to watch the yakitori being cooked right in front of them.
The restaurant has been run by the family since its establishment and is currently run by the third generation of brothers. Don't miss the "pork belly vegetable skewers" with lettuce and tomatoes wrapped around pork belly, which they invented, or the "stew" with tteokbang (rectum) and other ingredients, which you can even drink the soup.
They want customers to feel free to enjoy delicious food, so all menu items are priced at one coin or less.

Enjoy Utsunomiya Gyoza and craft beer

 Jumbo Gyoza
Jumbo Gyoza" 500 yen (right), "Original Beer" 970 yen (left)

This craft beer and gyoza restaurant is located in the "Sun Mall Otsuka Shopping Street" at the south exit of Otsuka Station. It is directly operated by a company based in Tochigi Prefecture that imports craft beer and sells Utsunomiya gyoza (dumplings) wholesale.
We recommend the handmade jumbo gyoza, which have not changed since the establishment. First, taste the flavor of the ingredients without dipping them in anything, then dip them in yuzu ponzu (citrus-based vinegar) for a refreshing taste.
The original beer is characterized by its hop-derived bitterness and citrus aroma, making it a perfect match for the gyoza.

Over 100 varieties of craft beer with a wide variety

If you are having trouble deciding which beer to order, ask a Staff/staff member for advice. They can suggest beers that match your request and offer tastings.
The food menu includes about 10 kinds of gyoza (dumplings), including jumbo gyoza, as well as sausages, nachos, and other items that are perfect for accompanying beer. The most popular item is the yaki-gyoza (grilled gyoza), which is overflowing with juices and has an irresistible chewy crust.

Draft beer is also available in plastic cups for take-out. We recommend enjoying it while enjoying the view of the Otsuka cityscape.

Seafood from Toyosu and Hokkaido at reasonable prices

 The
The "Gunkawa" (2,530 yen) comes with miso soup.

The owner, who used to work at a long-established sushi restaurant in Otsuka, became independent and opened the restaurant in 2023. The restaurant is well known for its fresh seafood purchased directly from Toyosu and Hokkaido, the owner's hometown.
Particularly popular is the "Iksagawa," a 10-piece nigiri-zushi menu that includes chutoro (medium fatty tuna), salmon, sweet shrimp, salmon roe, and more. The menu changes with the seasons, so you can enjoy seasonal ingredients. They insist on cutting the neta as thick as the rice so that the umami of the fish can be fully appreciated.

A la carte dishes that remind you of Hokkaido's culinary culture

Sushi items are lined up in front of the counter. In addition to "okonomi-nigiri," in which you can have one piece of your favorite sushi item, there are also "okonomi-rolls," such as hand rolls and thin rolls. Also recommended are a la carte dishes such as grilled komai, a fish unique to Hokkaido, and chawanmushi (steamed egg custard with chestnuts and corn) in the style of Dosanjin.

The lunch menu is also extensive and includes not only nigirizushi, but also a variety of satisfying items such as the sashimi set meal and zangi set meal. This is a great place to visit for lunch as well as dinner to enjoy seasonal sushi and the Hokkaido-born owner's Hokkaido menu.
