Happiness for 100 yen. Kumamoto local sweets made by a long-established shop.

The ikinari dango often sell out early in the day. The best time to buy them is in the middle of the morning.
The ikinari dango often sell out early in the day. The best time to buy them is in the middle of the morning.

This Japanese and Western-style confectionery store is located in an alleyway off the Namikizaka slope that extends north from the end of the Kamidori arcade. This long-established shop has been in business since before World War II, and its showcase is filled with simple and gently sweet Japanese and Western confections made by hand.
The most popular item is "ikinari dango," a local Kumamoto Prefecture confectionery. Daifukudo's signature ikinari dango is a large, heavy dumpling in one's hand. The dumpling has a soft and chewy skin, and is filled with smooth sweet bean paste and moist sweet potatoes. And at 100 yen for such a large portion, the price remains the same. It is best to visit in the morning, as the dumplings are often sold out by midday.
By the way, "ikinari dango" means that the dumpling can be made and served to customers even if they come suddenly (there are various theories). The simple ingredients are filled with a warm, gentle sweetness and the hospitality of the people of Kumamoto.

Local Guide Comment
The word "ikinari" in "ikinari dango" means "easy, quick, and immediate" in the Kumamoto dialect. Although they are sold at souvenir shops, "Daifukudo's" are the traditional taste loved by locals.

A 400-year-old Kumamoto specialty with a fresh and spicy flavor that is addictive!

The best way to enjoy the
The best way to enjoy the "mustard lotus root" is to cut it into 5 to 8 mm round slices. Also sold in gift boxes.

The Kumamoto specialty, mustard lotus root, is said to have originated about 400 years ago when Heigoro Mori, the founder of "Mori mustard lotus root," presented it as a nourishing food to Lord Tadatoshi Hosokawa of the Kumamoto domain, who had a weak constitution.
Even now, in the 18th generation, the taste has been handed down to the next generation, and each lotus root is handmade by carefully selecting the finest lotus roots from Kyushu and Yamaguchi. The crispy texture and refreshing spiciness of mustard are the main characteristics of the lotus root. You can enjoy it as it is, of course, or add soy sauce or mayonnaise for a different flavor. In addition, warming it in the microwave for a few seconds increases the spiciness, and is recommended for those who like spicy food. It can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 13 days, making it a safe souvenir.

Local Guide Comment
The "mustard lotus root-flavored chips," which reproduce the taste and flavor of mustard lotus root as it is, are also recommended as souvenirs.

The crunchy, crunchy, and addictive texture of this seaweed snack.

 Each
Each "fuga-maki" is hand-rolled and carefully finished.

This simple seaweed snack is made by wrapping carefully selected beans and nuts in young dried laver from the Ariake Sea. The rich flavor of the laver spreads in your mouth as soon as you put it in your mouth, and the crispy, crunchy texture is also delicious. A total of nine varieties are available, including soy soy sauce soybean, wasabi soybean salt cashew nut, soy sauce pistachio, and cheese arare. Assorted flavors are also available, making them popular souvenirs for large groups of people, such as for companies.
The flavor is exceptional, thanks to the company's roots in "Tsuho Nori," a seaweed specialty manufacturer established in 1961. It is perfect as a snack for children or as a teacake. The stick-like texture makes it easy to eat, and it is loved by people of all ages.

Local Guide Comment
Salted cashew nuts and soy sauce cashew nuts are personally recommended. I also like the fact that they are in stick form, making them easy to eat.

Cakes wrapped in green silver paper, which Kumamoto citizens miss dearly.

 In Kumamoto, the name
In Kumamoto, the name "green silver paper cake" is so familiar that it is called "liqueur marron.

Opened in 1962 as Kumamoto City's first confectionery store, it is now a long-established business with eight stores in the suburbs of Kumamoto City. The store's long-selling and most popular product is the "liqueur marron. The sponge soaked with liqueur is filled with butter cream mixed with Kumamoto Prefecture's astringent chestnuts. The moment you take a bite, the mellow aroma of the liqueur wafts into your nose, and then you are enveloped by the richness of the thick Japanese chestnut cream. The manufacturing method has not been changed at all since its establishment, and for Kumamoto citizens, this cake is nostalgic, including the package wrapped in green silver paper. How about buying one of these locally loved cakes as a souvenir for your loved ones?

Local Guide Comment
The chips are also very alcoholic, so be careful if you are not a fan of alcoholic beverages. The Kamidori and Shimodori stores have cafes where you can enjoy liqueur marrons, other cakes, and parfaits that are only available in the stores with a drink.

Established in 1999 as the first winery in Kumamoto Prefecture. Kikuka Wine, made from grapes grown under contract in Yamaga City, Kumamoto Prefecture, has won prestigious awards at numerous competitions. It is now the focus of attention from around the world.
Kikuka Chardonnay Barrel Aged" is a bottle of wine that was fermented at low temperature and then barrel-aged in French oak for about one year. It has an elegant taste with rich fruitiness and a gorgeous aroma from the oak. It is dry and goes well with horse meat dishes, complementing each other's flavors. We recommend drinking it in a large glass at a slightly higher temperature, but not too cold. If you like wine, this is a must-have souvenir.

Upcycling Kumamoto's rush grass scraps with the power of design

 SWING
SWING" earrings with a swinging design, 5,500 yen; "HANABI" earrings with an image of sparkling fireworks, 8,800 yen

Delicate accessories that look like woven beads. The material used is rush grass, a specialty of Kumamoto. The brand "ititiiti" makes use of the rush grass scraps produced when making tatami mats, etc. OMO5 Kumamoto sympathizes with the concept and sells them at the store in the OMO Base (Travelers' Fun Lounge) on the third floor.
After the rush grass is chopped into small pieces, the spongy cross sections are threaded one by one with a needle and arranged into various shapes to make earrings and pierced earrings. They are light, comfortable to wear, and have just the right amount of presence, making them a good accent for an outfit.

Local Guide Comment
Igusa is often associated with tatami mats, but the accessories made of rush grass created by two artists who have experience in the construction industry are delicate and gorgeous. They will be useful in a variety of situations, from everyday use to formal occasions.
