3Nishikawa-ya Chiyori-cho main store "Kempi
Long-established Japanese sweets store with the longest history in Shikoku
Founded in 1688 (the first year of the Genroku era), this is the longest-established Japanese confectionary store in Shikoku. Even before its establishment as a confectionary store, it served as an official merchant since the entry of Kazutoyo Yamauchi, lord of the Tosa Domain, and has a long history as an official confectionary shop of the Tosa Domain until the Meiji era (1868-1912).
In addition to traditional confections such as "Kempi," a dried confectionary famous in Tosa, and "Umeboshi," a rice cake with the aroma of shiso (Japanese shiso plant), we have been trying new confections such as "Ryoma Monogatari," a chocolate bun with Konatsu, a Tosa specialty citrus fruit, and "Kazutoyo's Wife," a sweet white bean paste wrapped in milk flavor skin to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Kochi Castle construction. The shop is also taking on the challenge of making new Tosa confections.
Kempi," a simple yet tasty snack with a firm texture, is a captivating experience.
Kempi," a dried confectionary, is the store's signature product. Inspired by the making of somen noodles, Saibei Nishikawa-ya, the shop's founder, kneaded flour, sugar, and a little egg, stretched it, cut it into thin strips, and baked it. The greatest feature of this product is its firmness. The first bite is hard, but the more you chew it, the deeper its flavor and gentle sweetness gradually spreads in your mouth. Kempi is generally known as "sweet potato kempi" made from sweet potatoes, but in fact, Nishikawa-ya's Kempi has its roots in Kochi. If you give this Tosa confectionary together with a secret story about the history of Kochi, it will be a different kind of souvenir.
Product name and price: Kempi, 5 bags, 648 yen
Shelf life: Approximately 3 months from the date of manufacture.

It is made from bonito caught by single-strike fishing, which prevents the fish from being damaged and keeps it fresh. Tosa's traditional straw-frying method grills the surface at high temperature in one go, locking in the flavor and making the skin aromatic.
After defrosting at home, cut the bonito into thick slices, garnish with your favorite condiments such as myoga, garlic, and shiso leaves, and serve with the sauce that comes with the set or your favorite ponzu sauce.
