Recommended Karuizawa Dinners for Families with Children
When visiting Karuizawa with children, choosing a restaurant is a common concern. Since it is a special trip, you want to create memories at a wonderful restaurant. While there are restaurants in Karuizawa that welcome children and can be used without hesitation, we would like to introduce some where you can truly enjoy your meal with your family.
1Iihashi Residence
A detached house restaurant where you can enjoy authentic Italian cuisine in a casual setting.
This restaurant, located in a famous building designed by architect Junzo Sakakura, offers authentic Italian cuisine. It opened in January 2024 on the site formerly occupied by the French restaurant "Domaine de Mikuni," run by Kiyomi Mikuni. The owner says, "We want people to enjoy Italian food in a casual, relaxed atmosphere. Children are also welcome." The special french fries, developed so that children can enjoy them too, are said to be very popular with adults as well.
If you have small children, booking a private room will give you peace of mind.
The menu at Iihashi-tei is the same for both lunch and dinner, focusing on à la carte dishes. It is recommended that families order and share 4 to 6 dishes, ranging from appetizers to primo piatto (first course) pasta dishes and secondo piatto (second course) meat or fish mains. If you have small children, we recommend booking a private room. You can enjoy your meal while taking in the sunlight streaming through the large glass windows and the nature of Karuizawa.
You can also consult with the staff about arrangements for children, such as meat sauce pasta. Why not dress up and go out as a family?

2Yusuge
Enjoy exquisite unaju (eel over rice) and Shinshu river fish dishes with your family.
This is a famous restaurant where you can taste river fish dishes associated with Nagano Prefecture, such as sweetfish, char, Shinano trout, and Shinshu salmon. One of the signature dishes is eel. The Kanto-style eel rice box, finished by steaming and grilling, is plump, thick, and has an addictive flavor. If you are dining with children, we recommend ordering "Eel Sauce Rice Balls" as well. Hungry children are sure to be satisfied with rice balls soaked in the secret, replenished sauce.
We serve river fish swimming in the restaurant's own fish tank.
In addition to table seating, the restaurant also has tatami rooms and spacious seating where three generations of a family can spend time together. If you have the chance, we recommend visiting on foot or by taxi so you can enjoy some drinks. You can taste local Shinshu sake along with regional dishes such as salt-grilled sweetfish (seasonal), char sashimi, Saku carp sashimi, and deep-fried dace. Shinshu salmon sashimi is popular with children. Its clean, distinct flavor is sure to satisfy adults as well.

The steak and hitsumabushi made with Shinshu Alps beef are superb!
Opened in July 2024 on the grounds of Hotel Berlinetta Karuizawa, this Western-style restaurant and cafe features a charming Western-inspired exterior. The signature menu items are various meat dishes made with Shinshu Alps beef, a brand-name beef, with a wide selection including beef hitsumabushi made with luxurious sirloin and hearty loin steaks. The Shinshu Alps beef, characterized by its well-balanced sweet fat and tender texture, is sure to satisfy even the children. It is a good idea to order multiple dishes and share them with the family.
We also have a wide selection of children's menu items, such as kids' plates and omurice.
There is also a wide variety of menus for children. Popular among families is the "Kids Plate," which comes with a hamburger steak, a large fried shrimp, and a bonus toy. This is offered at an affordable price for both lunch and dinner. There is also a wide selection of a la carte menus using local ingredients, such as Caesar salad with Karuizawa fruit tomatoes and Shinshu salmon carpaccio.

4Italian Restaurant La Luce
Authentic Italian food that is kid-friendly.
An Italian restaurant that opened in Karuizawa in 2000. It relocated to its current premises on the same grounds in 2023.
The bagna cauda is a dish that both children and adults often order again once they have tried it. The sauce is a creamy type made with garlic and anchovies. You dip vegetables into the warm bagna sauce. The restaurant aims for local production for local consumption as much as possible, and depending on the season, you can encounter vegetables from contract farmers who use natural or organic farming methods.
The chef's wife, who is in charge of service, is a mother of five children. She says she wanted to create a restaurant where families with children could easily enjoy authentic Italian cuisine. For example, it is recommended to have the pasta boiled a little softer, or for small children in the late stages of weaning, to dip the "organic corn soup" with "natural Hoshino yeast bread".

The "Organically Grown Corn Soup" fills your mouth with the natural sweetness of the corn!
You can even dine while your baby sleeps.
You take off your shoes when entering the restaurant. While there are table seats, the low tables are popular with families with children. You can lay out a long floor cushion next to the low table to let your baby sleep, and there are also small chairs for children. A simple diaper-changing table is installed in the restroom, and the facilities for children are well-equipped. However, please remember that this is fundamentally a restaurant for people of all generations to enjoy, so please be mindful of your manners.

5Sonmin Shokudo
A casual restaurant where you can enjoy carefully selected menu items.
The name "Sonmin-Shokudo" comes from the novel "Beautiful Village" by Tatsuo Hori, who wrote about Karuizawa. It is a casual dining restaurant adjacent to "Hoshino Onsen Tombo-no-yu." Since there are no set meal times, it is popular with families throughout the day.
This Caesar salad uses half a head of lettuce, with bacon, croutons, and a soft-boiled egg topped inside the lettuce, which is opened up like a flower. It is a popular menu item that is also fun to cut and serve yourselves.
Children can experience the taste of fresh lettuce that is crisp, juicy, and sweet.
Even the hamburger steak that everyone loves is served Shinshu-style.
The hamburger steak is served in a style where it is simmered in miso, and the set meal topped with rich, melted cheese is popular. Miso and cheese are both fermented foods that go well together, and their flavors create a synergistic effect that deepens the taste. It is a delicious dish unique to Shinshu that will satisfy not only children but also adults.

6Italian Il Sogno
We can also accommodate requests to suit children's tastes.
An Italian restaurant located in "Harunire Terrace." The oven-baked pizza, in particular, is very popular with everyone from children to adults. The Margherita, topped with fresh highland tomatoes that spread a natural sweetness, is a classic. There are also dessert pizzas and pasta made with local Shinshu flour, so the whole family can enjoy it. You can rest assured that they will accommodate requests, such as reducing the salt content or minimizing the use of unique herbs for children.

A space where you can enjoy your meal in a relaxed atmosphere
The bench seats along the wall are popular with families with children. While child seats are available for rent, bench seats make it easier for parents and children to sit together and eat smoothly. Another feature is that the restaurant is spacious, allowing you to spend time there without feeling self-conscious.

7Restaurant & Cafe Kitzbuhel
Enjoy traditional German flavors in Karuizawa
You can enjoy representative German home-style cooking prepared by a chef who earned their master's qualification in Munich, Germany. The sausages, made with domestic pork and spices imported from Germany, are particularly authentic. The most popular item is the "Assorted 4-Kind Sausage Platter," which allows you to compare flavors like the coarse-ground "Puelzer" sausage and the white "Weisswurst" sausage. The "Fleischkäse," a meatloaf-style steamed sausage patty, is a dish that is also easy for children to eat. Additionally, the "Eisbein," a traditional German dish of braised pork knuckle, is also exquisite.
The spacious interior allows for entry with strollers
We always have 8 types of beer and 20 types of wine available, all imported from Germany. Please feel free to make requests, as we can help you choose based on your preferences and the dishes you order. For children, we also offer "Shinshu Cloudy Fuji Apple Juice," made from 100% apple juice from Shinshu.
From early summer to early winter, we also feature dishes using vegetables grown in our own garden within the town. The restaurant has an open atmosphere with a terrace. There is plenty of space between tables, and you can enter with a stroller, so you can enjoy a relaxing meal even with a baby.

8Minerva Sabo
A nostalgic café featuring a wide variety of original menu items
Celebrating its 41st year in Karuizawa, this long-established restaurant is marked by a building that resembles an English Western-style house. As the name "Sabou" (tea room) suggests, it started as a cafe focusing on drinks, but after receiving requests to "add food to the menu," they began serving pasta. The original fresh pasta is characterized by its chewy texture. While they usually use egg pasta, they also have dried noodles available for those with egg allergies. All the accompanying sauces are homemade, and the cream-based sauces in particular coat the pasta perfectly.
Home-style seasoning that is easy for children to eat
Pizza is a must-try alongside the pasta. The thin crust is crispy, and you can really taste the flavor of the dough itself. The "Pizza with Plenty of Vegetables and Miso Sauce," made with Shinshu miso, has a gentle flavor where the sweetness of the miso and vegetables perfectly match. Both the pasta and pizza can be shared and enjoyed with children. Furthermore, the "Dinner Set" for two, which includes a half-and-half pizza, fresh pasta, homemade ice cream or yogurt, and drinks, is a great value at 3,000 yen. The restaurant also features a terrace and a room where you can bring your pets.
