The Atami cherry tree is said to have been introduced to Atami by Italians in the early Meiji period (1868-1912), along with lemon and date palms. It is characterized by its very early blooming, which is almost the same time as the Kanhizakura (cold-blooming cherry tree) in Okinawa, which blooms in January, making it popular as an early blooming cherry tree and attracting many tourists to Atami.

Blooming season of the Atami cherry trees

The blooming season for Atami cherry blossoms is typically from January through early February. One of the distinctive features of Atami cherry blossoms is their exceptionally long blooming period, as a single branch produces two types of buds: early-blooming and late-blooming.While typical cherry blossoms fade within 1 to 2 weeks, Atami Cherry Blossoms continue to bloom for over a month, allowing you to enjoy their beauty for an extended period.
Although Atami Cherry Blossoms can be enjoyed all over Atami during the season, here are some of the most beautiful spots to see them.

The "Atami Sakura Itogawa Cherry Blossom Festival" is held during the blooming season of the Atami cherry trees. The festival is held mainly along the Itogawa River promenade that runs through the center of Atami city, and is filled with street performances and musical performances by bands. During the festival, the cherry blossoms are lit up in the evening, so you can also enjoy the cherry blossoms at night.

Atami Seaside Park, where Marinspa Atami is located, is also famous for Atami cherry blossoms. Visitors can enjoy the cherry blossoms while walking along the seaside park.

The Atami cherry blossoms also bloom near the statue of "Kamanariya Heishichi and his wife," where you can see the sea and cherry blossoms at the same time. It is famous as a spot with a great view of the sea and cherry blossoms at the same time.

Atami cherry trees also bloom along the city road in front of the ume (plum) orchard. If you go there when the ume (plum) blossoms are in bloom, you can enjoy both ume and cherry blossoms in one day.

In Atami, you can enjoy not only the early-blooming “Atami Cherry Blossoms” but also the “Somei Yoshino” variety. Like in the Kanto region, the Somei Yoshino typically reach their peak bloom around March each year.

Atami Castle, the “Cherry Blossom Festival” is held, and the sight of the cherry blossoms illuminated throughout the castle town is truly magical.

Well-maintained hiking trails make it an ideal spot for picnics. Although it’s a bit of a drive from the area around Atami Station, it’s well worth the trip—especially if you’re out for a drive.
