Is it true that it is warm throughout the year? Temperatures in Atami and What to Wear in Each Season

Atami has an image of being warm, but to find out what the climate is really like, we have compiled information on temperatures in Atami and seasonal clothing to help you when sightseeing, using historical data as a reference.

Atami Temperature Information and Seasonal Clothing

Atami has long been one of the most popular hot spring resorts in Japan. Located only 35-50 minutes from Tokyo by train, it is easily accessible, but its climate differs slightly from that of Tokyo.
The annual average temperatures in Atami and Tokyo are almost the same, but a monthly comparison shows that the average temperature in Atami is higher from November to April, and in December, the average temperatures are 9.3°C in Atami and 8.2°C in Tokyo, a difference of 1°C.

In spring, the cherry blossoms are at their best, and many tourists visit Atami to see the Atami cherry blossoms and Someiyoshino cherry trees. In spring, the weather is warm, so long sleeves are sufficient. When visiting cherry blossom viewing spots in higher elevations, such as the Izu Kogen area, it is recommended to bring something to wrap yourself in (a jacket).

In summer, Atami is crowded with tourists who come to swim in the sea during the daytime, and fireworks displays are held at night.
Although temperatures in Atami rise to nearly 30°C during the height of summer, compared to the sweltering heat of Tokyo, the sea breeze often makes the temperature feel cooler and more comfortable than it actually is. At night, the temperature can reach around 20°C, so it is helpful to have a light cardigan, shirt, or other item to throw on. It is also a good idea to carry a stole or similar item for daytime sightseeing, as the air conditioning in the tourist properties is very effective.

In autumn, the trees turn red from late November to December each year. Atami Plum Garden, famous for its early-blooming ume (Japanese apricot) trees, is also a great spot for viewing the autumn colors, and is said to offer the "latest autumn colors in Japan.
The summer heat remains until mid-September, but after mid-September, the average temperature is a moderate 20°C. From October to November, you may want to change your clothing from short-sleeved to long-sleeved as the temperature gradually drops. It is recommended to bring a parka, cardigan, or light jacket that can be easily removed for temperature adjustment.

Atami is even more lively as a hot spring resort in winter. Unlike in the summer, the city offers not only sightseeing mainly by the sea, but also more fun in the mountains, such as picking plums and mandarin oranges at the Atami Plum Garden.

Atami is relatively warm in winter, but the strong "sea breeze" can make it feel colder than the temperature in fall and winter. Therefore, it is recommended that you wear a down coat or a coat and a scarf in winter to protect yourself from the sea wind. If you plan to walk around the city while sightseeing, it is also important to wear adjustable clothing under your coat so that you can adjust the temperature.
