It is now one of the top-class wine companies in Japan and has its Katsunuma Winery in Koshu City, Yamanashi Prefecture. Mainly grows "Koshu" grapes. Grapes are pressed slowly so as not to stress them, resulting in flavorful wines.

A traditional winery founded in 1937, Katsunuma Winery is located in the Katsunuma district of Katsunuma Prefecture. Under the motto of "making wine that reflects the climate of Katsunuma," the winery handles everything from grape cultivation to winemaking.
Particular emphasis is placed on wines made from Koshu, a grape indigenous to Japan. The representative brand is "Alga Blanca Isehara," which won a silver medal at the International Wine Challenge (IWC) 2018, one of the world's largest wine competitions.
The "Alga Blanca Brillante" from the same series is also noteworthy. It is a dry sparkling wine made with the same secondary fermentation in the bottle as champagne.

You will also learn about dishes that go well with wine, making wine much more accessible after participating.
The "Tasting Course," in which you can choose your favorite wine from 24 different wine servers, is also popular.

Located in Enzan, Kōshū City—in the northeastern part of the Kōfu Basin—this family-run winery is dedicated to “community-rooted winemaking.” Founded in 1930, the winery uses only grapes grown in the Higashi-Yamanashi region—one of Japan’s leading wine-producing areas—primarily from its own vineyards, to craft wines that excel in fruitiness and balance. The “Kizan Wine White,” made from 100% Koshu grapes, is a satisfying wine with a crisp acidity and the characteristic astringency of the Koshu variety. It pairs perfectly with Japanese cuisine, of course, but is also easy to drink as a meal-accompanying wine, allowing you to fully savor its flavor that reflects the character of the region.

A traditional brand that leads the Japanese wine world

From the right: “Château Lumière” (red), (white)

One of Japan’s most prestigious wineries. Since its founding in 1885 (Meiji 18), guided by the philosophy that “authentic wine comes from authentic grapes,” the winery has cultivated grapes using grass-covered vineyards that harness the power of nature, striving to produce wines that stand on the world stage.Numerous labels, including “Château Lumière”—which was served at an imperial banquet—are highly acclaimed both domestically and internationally.
Winery tours are available in 40-minute and 1-hour formats. Guided by staff members, visitors can explore the vineyards, the winemaking facility, the stone fermentation tanks, and the underground cellar. In particular, the stone fermentation tanks, built approximately 120 years ago, are designated as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. Because they are located underground and thanks to the cooling effect of the granite, the interior is kept at a low temperature. The shop sells “Ishigura Wine,” fermented right here, in limited quantities.

Premium wines can be found at the store.

About 40 brands of in-house wines are available, and you can also find limited edition wines depending on the season.

After the tour, head to the Restaurant, where you can enjoy “Yamanashi French” cuisine made with local ingredients, or visit the wine shop. There is also a tasting corner where you can sample over 20 varieties of wine for a fee.
Additionally, from late August to late October, a tasting corner for “Sturm”—wine in the middle of fermentation—opens. It has a fresh taste with a slight carbonation and low alcohol content; it’s slightly sweet with a refreshing fizz. Since this wine is only available at the shop and is sold out once it runs out, we recommend visiting early in the season.
A wine festival is held in late October. In addition to enjoying back vintages of wine and snack stalls run by renowned local restaurants, the event also features live music and games.

The Mars Hosaka Winery’s winemaking facility is open to visitors. There are five types of tanks, including wide-bodied ones for red wine and slender ones for white wine

Mars Wine was the first wine made from Yamanashi-grown grapes to win a gold medal at the “Domestic Wine Competition” (now the “Japan Wine Competition”). It was also selected as the wine served at a luncheon hosted by the Prime Minister’s wife during the 2008 Lake Toya Summit.
Following the “Mars Yamanashi Winery” in Isawa Town, the “Mars Hosaka Winery” opened in 2017. It stands at an elevation of 500 meters, overlooking the Kofu Basin.
Wine production at the winery utilizes a “gravity flow” design that takes advantage of the elevation differences on the slopes. This system relies on natural gravity to move the wine, reducing stress on the grapes and wine compared to pumping, thereby preserving the ingredients’ natural characteristics and producing full-bodied, flavorful wines.
