Lavender is synonymous with summer flowers in Hokkaido. The flower fields scattered throughout the Furano area are breathtaking, and many people have been captivated by their scenery.
There are four main varieties of lavender: "Yotei," "Hanamoiwa," "Noushi Hayazaki," and "Okamurasaki," each with different blooming times, colors, and scents. The four areas of Furano (Furano City, Kamifurano Town, Nakafurano Town, and Minamifurano Town), colored by these four types of lavender, each have their own unique character, and we recommend comparing their distinctive, stunning views.
1Farm Tomita
"Farm Tomita" is what made Furano's lavender famous nationwide. From late June to mid-August, when the flowers are in bloom, the air is filled with the soft scent of lavender. Its origin is the "Traditional Lavender Field." In the early Showa period, when cultivation began, it was shipped as a fragrance crop, and the farm still has a lavender oil distillery and a perfume blending room. At "Lavender East," a field for fragrance crops, you can sometimes see dynamic harvesting scenes with reapers in late July.
Out-of-season lavender and ever-blooming flower fields
The lavender season is very short, but in the "Greenhouse," lavender is grown outside of summer so it can be enjoyed regardless of the season. The "Gallery Fleur," a photo studio displaying photos of lavender fields from each season, is also recommended. In addition, until mid-October, you can enjoy flower fields where many types of flowers bloom in a relay-like fashion.
You can enjoy menus using lavender and local ingredients within the park, but the highlight is Farm Tomita's original "Freshly Baked Furano Melon Pan." With its crispy dough and creamy filling made with Furano melon juice, it is a delicious treat that will leave you wanting more.

2Nakafurano Town Hokuseiyama Lavender Field
The Nakafurano Town-operated Hokuseiyama Lavender Garden is located on Mt. Hokusei, a symbol of Nakafurano Town. From mid-July to early August, the ski slope transforms into a lavender field. In addition to four varieties of lavender, the foothills are planted with marigolds, salvia, cockscomb, sunflowers, kochia, peonies, lupines, and bugleweed, creating a rich tapestry of color. A landmark is the floral lettering spelling out "Nakafurano" near the summit, which can also be seen from National Route 237 (Furano National Highway).
Take the sightseeing lift to the summit
The pride of Nakafurano Town is the view from the summit of Mt. Hokusei. From the observation deck, you can enjoy a triple treat: a panoramic view of the Tokachi mountain range in summer, the rural scenery of the Furano Basin, and the vast lavender fields. In late autumn, you can enjoy the autumn foliage and the snow-capped Tokachi mountain range. A unique experience available only during the lavender blooming season is a "walk in the sky." Riding the sightseeing lift to view the flower fields from above is truly spectacular.

3Rokugo Observatory (Furano Jam Garden)
Rokugo in Furano City became famous as the setting for the TV drama "From the North Country." The scenery seen on television still spreads out before you today. The Rokugo Observation Deck, located on the grounds of the Furano Jam Garden, sits at an altitude of 500 meters. It is a scenic spot for flowers and landscapes where cool breezes blow. Lavender blooms about a week later here than on the plains, with the best viewing time typically from mid-July to around August 10th. Here, you can quietly enjoy the slowly arriving summer.

A gorgeous rainbow road that colors the beautiful landscape
Untouched nature remains in Rokugo. Its beauty is such that it was selected as one of the "100 Best Rural Landscapes in Beautiful Japan" by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. Adding color to this landscape is the flower field at the Rokugo Observation Deck, where you can see a competition of flowers such as marigolds, verbena bonariensis, cleome, alyssum, and red, purple, and white salvia.

4Kanno Farm
Kanno Farm is located at Bibaushi Pass along National Route 237 (Furano National Highway), which connects Furano and Biei. The lavender blooming season here is about a week later than in the city center, with the best viewing time typically in late July. Several varieties of lavender, such as "Nou-shi Hayazaki," "Okamurasaki," and "Lavender Grosso," dye the grounds in shades of purple. The view of the flower fields looking down from the hill, as well as the view looking up from the rest area at the bottom of the hill, are both magnificent. You can feel the true essence of Hokkaido in the vast, endless scenery.
Colorful flowers bloom until mid-October
At Kanno Farm, a farm on a hill, flowers are in full bloom until mid-October. You can enjoy a variety of dozens of different flowers. Eye-catching are the flower fields, where orange and yellow marigolds and white, purple, and red salvias are planted in a bold and beautiful way. Among the flowers, vegetable blossoms such as potatoes and pumpkins also make their presence felt. Vegetables harvested here can be enjoyed as corn soup, fried potatoes, or buttered potatoes at the on-site shop, Kinkonkanno. It is a spot that will satisfy both your heart and your stomach.

5Flower Land Kamifurano
Flower Land Kamifurano is located on a hill just off the national highway that connects Furano City and Asahikawa City. Beyond the lavender blooming all over the slope, you can see the Tokachi mountain range. At the foot of the mountains, a typical Hokkaido rural landscape spreads out. We also recommend trying your hand at making things using lavender at the workshop. There are a variety of menus you can easily participate in, such as the "Good Sleep Cotton Pillow" (approx. 10 minutes, 1,000 yen per person), where you can make a pillow with a gentle, relaxing scent using potpourri.
Tour the flower fields by tractor bus
True to the name "Flower Land," a variety of flowers bloom here in all their glory. From the time the lavender finishes its peak season until autumn, it is the season for marigolds, salvias, and cockscombs. You can tour the gorgeous flower fields on a sightseeing bus pulled by a tractor (fee required). After enjoying the scenery, be sure to taste Furano melons and corn, which are in season until around the end of September.

6Kanayama Lake Lavender Field
Lake Kanayama was created by the construction of the Kanayama Dam. It is filled with abundant water in a quiet mountain area. Located on the lakeshore is the Kanayama Lake Lavender Garden. Every year, for a short period from mid-July until the harvest in early August, the garden is filled with lavender. Even in vast Hokkaido, the combination of a lake and lavender is a unique, superb view found only here. You can enjoy this precious scenery to your heart's content while strolling along the garden paths.

Experience canoeing at Lake Kanayama
Lake Kanayama is also a treasure trove of activities. Canoeing is highly recommended in the summer. You can glide across the calm lake surface in a Canadian canoe. The sense of exhilaration is irresistible. Since there are guided experience tours, anyone can easily give it a try.
The Kanayama Dam Observatory, located about 10 minutes away by car, offers a dynamic view where you can see both Lake Kanayama and Kanayama Dam together.
