7 Delicious Sweets from Tokachi, the “Kingdom of Sweets”

The Tokachi area, located in southeastern Hokkaido, is a major producer of raw materials for sweets. High-quality raw materials such as wheat, dairy products, sugar beets (beet), and azuki beans (an essential ingredient for Japanese sweets) are produced and processed in Tokachi. Because of the availability of high-quality raw materials, Tokachi sweets are not only delicious but also reasonably priced, which is a pleasant point.

One of the unique pleasures of visiting the factory-direct store is the factory tour. The facility, which boasts one of the largest floor areas in the country for a factory with such rigorous hygiene standards, allows visitors to observe how the “Sanpōroku” birch-pattern design is applied and how the cake is sliced.
Furthermore, there’s a café corner where you can enjoy the taste of freshly made treats, and the Experience workshop (for a fee) offers daily activities such as cake-making and decorating cookies.
Another unique feature here is the “Sanpōroku Bargain Pack,” a hidden gem beloved by locals that’s made from the scraps of “Sanpōroku” produced during manufacturing. These packs are sold in limited quantities each day on a first-come, first-served basis to customers who line up before the store opens.

This chocolate specialty store was opened in 2013 by the owner-patissier, an Obihiro native who gained experience in Tokyo and Sapporo. There are always about eight kinds of cakes with plenty of chocolate on display in the showcase. Among them, the "quad chocolat" is the most recommended. It features six layers of cream made with 70% Colombian cacao chocolate and moist, flourless chocolate dough, which gives the cake a rich chocolate sweetness and bittersweetness.
