Let's know the temperature and clothes of Tsuchiura City, Ibaraki Prefecture, the "City of Bicycles
Tsuchiura City in Ibaraki Prefecture is located on the western shore of Kasumigaura, the second largest lake in Japan. In the central part of the city, there is Tsuchiura Castle Ruins Park, where turrets from the Edo period remain intact, and the Tsuchiura-juku merchant storehouse, which is full of the atmosphere of Edo (old Tokyo), while in the west, there is a rich natural environment at the foot of Mt. Direction from Tokyo is only about an hour by express train, making Tsuchiura a popular sightseeing destination for short trips. In recent years, a 180-km cycling road has been developed from Tsuchiura Station to the foot of Mt.
Tsuchiura City, located in a part of the Kanto Plain, is blessed with a mild climate throughout the year. Winter is characterized by almost no snowfall and many sunny days. Summer is hot and humid, and the water temperature in Kasumigaura exceeds 30°C. The average temperature in both cold and hot weather is only about 1 to 2°C above that of Tokyo, so you can go out with similar clothing.

Tsuchiura City Spring (March-May) Temperatures and Clothing
The average temperature in March is 8.1℃. In early March, when the northwesterly wind "Tsukuba Oroshi" blows, it is still cold and a coat is necessary, but after the middle of the month, the temperature rises. In late March, when the cherry blossoms, the city flower, bloom, the temperature can reach a high of over 20 degrees Celsius.
Cherry blossom viewing spots along the Tsukuba Kasumigaura Rinrin Road, which runs from Tsuchiura Station to the foot of Mount Tsukuba, such as the Shinkawa and Sakuragawa embankments and Kamejyo Park, will be in full bloom in early April. The 30,000 tulips in Kasumigaura General Park also come into bloom, and the entire town comes alive at once. During the daytime, the average temperature is over 15 degrees Celsius, so you can enjoy viewing cherry blossoms in the warm, sunny weather. However, it gets cold at night, so be prepared with a coat or stole.
The average temperature in May is about 18℃. The weather is also ideal for a day out. The azaleas at Asahi Touge Observation Park are at their best during this season. The maximum temperature rises to around 25°C, and you can spend the day in short sleeves.
Summer (June-August) Temperatures and Clothing in Tsuchiura City
When the rainy season begins in early June, Kasumigaura, a sacred place for bass fishing, is crowded with anglers targeting bass that have finished spawning. Rainy days in June, when the average temperature is below 20°C, can be chilly, so be sure to bring a jacket to protect you from the rain and wind when going out around the lake. In Tsuchiura, the largest producer of lotus root in Japan, lotus flowers bloom from late June, and by the time they are at their peak in late July, the average temperature is over 30℃. This heat lasts until the end of August. The city and the lake are exposed to strong sunlight, so sunburn protection is a must. Be sure to take all possible measures to prevent heat stroke.
From late July to early October, Kasumigaura is the scene of a summer tradition of "sail-pulling boats" operating on weekends. The boats are revived from the boats used in the fishing industry during the Meiji era (1868-1912), and visitors can enjoy the refreshing scenery of the boats sailing on the lake with their large sails fluttering.
Tsuchiura City Autumn (September-November) Temperatures and Clothing
The lingering summer heat is severe in September. Until the middle of the month, the maximum temperature is over 30℃ every day, and you can still wear short sleeves. After the equinoxes, the average temperature drops to around 20°C, making it feel cooler. Long-sleeved clothing is the norm.
The average temperature in October, when the Tsuchiura National Fireworks Competition, Tsuchiura City's largest event and one of Japan's three largest fireworks festivals, is held, is 17.6°C. When going to see fireworks, we recommend wearing a long-sleeved shirt and a thick parka. In addition, a lap blanket is useful. In late October, the lowest average temperature is below 10℃ and a coat is necessary.
The best time to view the autumn foliage is from mid-November to early December at the 1,000-year-old giant ginkgo tree at Saorenji Temple and the maple forest at Asahi Pass. The temperature difference between the two areas becomes significant, with temperatures varying by 10°C or more in the morning and evening, and the lowest temperatures sometimes falling into minus on some days. Be sure to bring warm clothing when going out to view the autumn foliage.
Winter (December to February) Temperatures and Clothing in Tsuchiura City
Migratory and rare birds such as swans, herons, kingfishers, and goshawks gather in the Kasumigaura area in winter. The average temperature during this season, when many people visit for bird-watching, is 6°C in December, 3.5°C in January, and 4.2°C in February. On days when the northwesterly "Tsukuba Oroshi" wind blows down, it is cold to the core. When going out, wear a down coat or other heavy outerwear and take measures to protect your feet from the cold.
Early February in early spring. Vivid "tsurushi-bina" dolls that have been displayed in old houses and stores in the city since the Edo period are displayed, and early-blooming plum trees are in full bloom in gardens and parks. The arrival of spring can be felt little by little, and people can enjoy walking around the city with a light step. However, you still need to keep warm as winter temperatures still persist with the lowest average temperature of -0.5℃. We recommend warming up with winter delicacies such as Tsuchiura's famous lotus root dishes and anglerfish hot pot during your stroll.
