Recommended fireworks shows unique to Hakone for the year 2025

One of Hakone's summer traditions is the fireworks display at "Lake Ashinoko. During the "Lake Ashinoko Summer Festival Week" held every year from July 31, festivities and fireworks are held for six consecutive days. The "Hakone Gora Summer Festival Daimonji-yaki" held during the Bon Festival is also popular for its collaboration with fireworks. Here are some other recommended fireworks festivals unique to Hakone.

Various festivals are held in summer at Hakone Shrine, which is located on the shore of Lake Ashi. The "Lake Ashinoko Summer Festival Week" started about 30 years ago to celebrate these festivals to a greater number of people. Starting with the "Kosui Matsuri," a festival dedicated to the lake's guardian deity, Kutouryuu, festivals and fireworks displays will be held over a six-day period beginning on July 31. Fireworks displays held along the lakeside can be enjoyed from boats.

Beautiful co-starring of spectacular fireworks and quietly flowing lanterns

The "Lake Ashinoko Summer Festival Week" will be topped off by the "Kosui Matsuri" fireworks display held at Moto Hakone Bay.
At dusk, the priest of Hakone Shrine takes a boat out to the lake, makes an offering to the guardian deity, Kutouryu Myojin, and returns to start the fireworks display. Approximately 5,000 fireworks will be launched, including underwater fireworks blooming on the quiet surface of the lake, Niagara Falls over the lake, continuous fireworks, and starmine. The fireworks are a spectacular display of color in the night sky and are reflected in the surface of the lake, creating a rich sense of atmosphere. Combined with the lights of hundreds of lanterns floated on the lake, it creates a romantic midsummer evening.

On August 2 and 3, the "Summer Night Festa" will be held at Hakone-en, a commercial complex located on the shores of Lake Ashi, where visitors can enjoy shows and fireworks. A total of approximately 5,000 fireworks will be launched on both days.
The most attractive point of the festival is its location. The most attractive feature of the festival is its location: the fireworks will be launched right in front of "Hakone-en" and can be viewed up close and personal. Underwater fireworks", semicircular flowers blooming on the surface of the lake, are exceptional.

The Kozu Ryujin Festival, a festival of Kutouryu Myojin, the guardian deity of Lake Ashinoko, is held as part of the fireworks display. After the Shinto ritual is performed at the Kutouryuu Shrine, the sacred fire is carried to Kozujiri Bay and ignited in a bonfire, which is the signal for the fireworks display. The highlight of the festival is the underwater fireworks. The fireworks are shot toward the surface of the lake, creating a semicircle of blooming flowers on the lake, and at the same time the sparkles of the fireworks are reflected on the surface of the water, creating a spectacular sight. Fireworks in a small bay with mountains in the foreground reverberate with the sound, making the fireworks even more powerful.
After the fireworks, don't miss the marching band performed by high school students from all over the country.

A fantastic world of burning torii gates, fireworks and lanterns

The fireworks display is the last event of the Lake Ashinoko Summer Festival Week.
After the Komagata Shrine ceremony, when the lanterns are floated into the lake in the evening, two large torii gates specially set up on the lake are set on fire. The silhouette of the torii gates as they burn fiercely invites the viewer into a mysterious world. At the same time, the fireworks display begins. The fireworks display continues until the torii gate burns down, with three types of fireworks in rotation: a large shakudama, which gloriously colors the sky above, beautiful fireworks blooming near overhead, and underwater fireworks fanning out on the surface of the sea. Combined with the burning torii gate, the surface of the lake is decorated in a spectacular manner.

The "Dai" (big fire) and the fireworks are a magnificent display.

Since 1921, this festival has been held every year around the time of the Obon Festival, and is one of the three major festivals in Hakone.
The festival is held near the summit of Mt. Meiseigatake, 924 meters above sea level. The character for "dai" is made from 250 bundles of dried shinodake bamboo (about 30 cm in diameter) and 200 to 300 torches (about 2.5 m high). When lit, the character appears in the darkness and fireworks are shot off. The fireworks display is centered on the "Starmine," a series of rapid-firing fireworks, as well as other fireworks, including a 110-meter Niagara, and other fireworks.
The sight of the beautiful fireworks blooming over the majestic fire letters burning on the surface of the mountains is truly fantastic.
