5 recommended restaurants where you can taste "mixed juice," a specialty of Shinsekai, Osaka
Mixed juice" is a local delicacy representative of Osaka, combining the fresh sweetness of fruit and the mildness of milk. This drink was created by making the most of ripe fruits with the idea that it would be a waste to throw them away, and since its birth in Shinsekai, Osaka during the Showa period (1926-1989), it has been a favorite menu item at coffee shops.
Mixed juice, which is imbued with the merchant spirit of the Osaka people, has evolved into a flavor that incorporates the individuality of each store, and is still served at many coffee shops today. In this issue, we will introduce five recommended stores in the Shinsekai area, the birthplace of mixed juice.
1Cafe Causerie
Popular café with a mix of old and new charm.
The exterior of the coffee shop, which was established in 1947, was renovated in 2021 while retaining its original appearance. The nostalgic atmosphere of the store, which still retains a nostalgic aspect but is somewhat sophisticated, is filled with the aroma of freshly brewed siphon coffee, making for a pleasant and relaxing experience.
The mixed juice, which has a sorbet-like texture, is made from fruits such as bananas, tangerines, and Japanese yellow peaches. It is characterized by a light sweetness that does not linger, and the banana flavor can be fully appreciated.
The pudding a la mode, made entirely in house, is also excellent!
Pudding a la mode," whose theme changes seasonally, is a popular menu item that features old-fashioned hard pudding as the main ingredient. At the time of the interview, it was a tropical specimen of gently flavored ice cream made with Okinawan mangoes, crispy light coconut tuile, and sweet and sour pineapple. All toppings are homemade, and the gorgeous looks are also very exciting.
Cookies, financiers, and other baked goods are also available for sale, making them perfect as small souvenirs. Please note that only cashless payment is accepted when you visit the store.

2Coffee shop Tamaichi
Shinsekai's most legendary coffee shop for over 95 years
Currently run by the third-generation owner, this long-established store was established in 1928 and is regarded as the oldest coffee shop in Shinsekai. In addition to coffee shop menu items such as pudding and pancakes, the shop also offers a variety of meals such as curry and pilaf.
The mixed juice, which has undergone many minor changes based on the original recipe, is made without bananas, which is rare in Osaka. It is made from a mix of apples, yellow peaches, tangerines, and mangoes. By using fresh apples instead of canned, a refreshing aftertaste is achieved. It is especially delicious in the winter when apples are in season.
Nostalgic pancakes with a comforting, nostalgic flavor
When you are hungry, you should definitely try the pancakes, which are moist, fluffy, and gently sweet. The hot batter soaked in butter and drizzled with maple syrup will bring back memories of your childhood, and the simple taste will make your heart smile.
Morning service including toast and hot dogs is also available, so we recommend using the shop in the morning. Enjoy the retro Showa-era atmosphere of the restaurant.

4Senariya Coffee
The birthplace of mixed juice, loved throughout the ages
One of the pioneers of mixed juices, the shop was founded in Shinsekai in 1948 as a fruit shop, and its roots can be traced back to the original owner's idea of mixing ripe fruit in a blender and serving it in the store. The delicious taste of the fruit gained a good reputation, and in 1960, the business changed to a coffee shop. Although the store was once closed due to a lack of successors, it made a successful comeback.
