5 recommended shops where you can taste Osaka Shinsekai's famous "mixed juice"
"Mixed juice," a local gourmet specialty representing Osaka, blends the fresh sweetness of fruit with the mellowness of milk. Born from the idea that it would be a waste to throw away ripe fruit, this drink originated in Osaka's Shinsekai district during the Showa era and has been loved as a staple menu item in coffee shops ever since.
Mixed juice, which embodies the merchant spirit of the people of Osaka, has evolved into flavors that incorporate the individuality of each shop and is still served in many coffee shops today. In this article, we will introduce 5 recommended shops in the Shinsekai area, the birthplace of mixed juice.
1Kissa Causery
A popular cafe where the charms of old and new mingle
The exterior of this coffee shop, founded in 1947 (Showa 22), remains unchanged, but it was renovated in 2021. While retaining its nostalgic appearance, the interior has a somewhat sophisticated feel, where the aroma of freshly brewed siphon coffee wafts through the air, allowing you to spend a comfortable and relaxing time.
The mixed juice you can taste here, which has a texture like sherbet, uses fruits such as bananas, mandarin oranges, and domestic yellow peaches. It is characterized by a light sweetness that doesn't linger, and you can fully enjoy the flavor of the bananas.
The pudding a la mode, made entirely from scratch, is also exquisite
The "Pudding a la Mode," which changes its theme with the seasons, is a popular menu item featuring a traditional firm pudding as the star. At the time of our visit, it was a tropical version featuring gentle-tasting ice cream made with mangoes from Okinawa Prefecture, combined with crispy, light coconut tuiles and sweet and sour pineapple. All the toppings are homemade, and the gorgeous appearance is sure to delight your heart.
They also sell baked goods such as cookies and financiers, which are perfect for small souvenirs. Please note that only cashless payments are accepted, so keep this in mind when visiting.

2Kissa Tamaichi
A legendary coffee shop in Shinsekai that has been around for over 95 years
Founded in 1928 (Showa 3), this long-established shop is said to be the oldest coffee shop in Shinsekai and is currently run by the third-generation owner. In addition to cafe menu items like pudding and pancakes, they also offer meals such as curry and pilaf.
Their mixed juice, which has undergone minor changes based on the first generation's recipe, is unusual for Osaka in that it does not use bananas. It is made by mixing apples, yellow peaches, mandarin oranges, and mangoes. By using fresh apples instead of canned ones, they achieve a refreshing aftertaste. It is especially delicious in winter when apples are in season.
Pancakes with a nostalgic flavor that put your heart at ease
If you are feeling a bit peckish, you must try the pancakes, which are appealing for their moist, fluffy texture and gentle sweetness. When you let the butter melt into the piping hot batter and drizzle it with plenty of maple syrup, the simple flavor will bring back childhood memories and make you smile.
Morning service with toast or hot dogs is also available, so visiting in the morning is recommended. Why not enjoy it along with the Showa-retro atmosphere of the interior?

A classic Showa-retro coffee shop you can't miss if you're looking for the real deal
The shop is marked by its Showa-retro exterior, featuring green striped eaves and a showcase lined with food samples. Opened in 1967 (Showa 42), it is a famous shop beloved by locals and tourists alike.
The mixed juice, made primarily with yellow peaches combined with white peaches, mandarin oranges, and pineapple, has a smooth, thick texture with a slight hint of fruit pulp. The addition of orange syrup gives it a refreshing sweetness. Its rich and mellow flavor is truly the "royal road of Naniwa mixed juice." It is also recommended for those trying mixed juice for the first time.
Also pay attention to the nostalgic interior
The interior, packed with the stylish taste of the first owner who originally ran a photo studio—featuring marble tables, vermilion leather sofas, and rounded silver lighting—is incredibly nostalgic. Just looking at it makes your heart flutter. It is often featured in the media as a cafe with wonderful decor.
In addition to the mixed juice, items like the "banana float" and "pudding royale" are also popular. Since it is located at the foot of the Tsutenkaku Tower, known as a symbol of Osaka, it is best to visit while sightseeing.

4Sennariya Coffee
The birthplace of the mixed juice loved across generations
A pioneer of mixed juice. Founded in Shinsekai in 1948 as a fruit shop, its roots lie in the first owner's idea to blend ripe fruit in a mixer and serve it at the storefront. Its delicious taste gained a reputation, leading to a business conversion into a cafe in 1960 (Showa 35). Although it once closed due to a lack of successors, it has made a magnificent comeback.
The mixed juice, which recreates the traditional taste, features a well-balanced harmony of apple, banana, mandarin orange, yellow peach, and white peach, with a flavor that brings out their natural sweetness. By leaving a little bit of the apple skin on, they enhance the refreshing flavor and aroma.
Be sure to check out the rich sweets and creative menu items too
There are also other mixed juice options available, such as those with fancy toppings or float-style versions. They are sure to be photogenic, so why not check those out as well?
Another item you'll want to enjoy is the voluminous "pudding a la mode." Surrounding the classic, firm pudding sitting in the center is a mountain of colorful fruits, including strawberries, oranges, blueberries, and caramelized bananas. Sharing it with friends or family is also recommended.

A shop you'll want to visit at least once, known as the birthplace of mixed juice. It is located inside Jan Jan Yokocho, surrounded by many shops serving kushikatsu, another Shinsekai specialty. Enjoying some kushikatsu followed by a mixed juice is a great way to experience it.
