Beppu Park

A picturesque landscape where cherry blossoms and tulips are in full bloom

A general park located in the center of Beppu City. It is spacious and open, and is loved as a place of relaxation for citizens, used for seasonal events and school activities such as field trips. Every spring, about 100 cherry trees bloom in full glory. Each tree is large and voluminous, and because they are planted together, the effect is even more spectacular. You can enjoy cherry blossom viewing under the trees with a packed lunch.
Also, tulips and azaleas bloom at the same time as the cherry blossoms, making the park very colorful. A walking course is also maintained, so cherry blossom viewing while walking is also recommended.

Beppu Rakutenchi

A nostalgic amusement park dyed in the colors of cherry blossoms in full bloom

Founded in 1929 (Showa 4), this is the oldest amusement park in Kyushu. When you enter by taking the cable car up the mountain slope from the main gate, you are greeted by the "Flower Ferris Wheel," the only double-decker Ferris wheel in Japan. There are plenty of fun things to do, including 13 retro attractions such as a merry-go-round and a roller coaster, opportunities to interact with animals, and the Rakutenchi specialty, the "Duck Race."
It is also famous as a cherry blossom viewing spot, with about 3,000 cherry trees blooming throughout the park. There is also a large suspension bridge about 150m long, from which you can overlook the beautiful Beppu Bay and the park dyed in pink at the same time. The "Cherry Blossom Festival" is held annually from mid-March to early April. During the peak blooming period, the park is also open at night, allowing visitors to enjoy the illuminated night cherry blossoms and the glittering night view of Beppu. In addition, there is a hot spring called "Zekkei no Yu" (Superb View Hot Spring) in the park that is free for park visitors to use, so you can also enjoy a bath after cherry blossom viewing.

Yukemuri Observatory

The combination of cherry blossoms and steam is a unique pleasure of spring in Beppu

Kannawa Onsen, one of the Beppu hot spring resorts, is famous for its billowing steam. Located on the slope leading to the residential area of Kannawa Onsen is the "Yukemuri Observatory." From the observatory, you can overlook the steam of the hot spring town, as well as the mountains towering in the background, such as Mount Tsurumi and Mount Ohira (Mount Ogi). In 2001, this scenery was selected as the second best in Japan, following Mount Fuji, in the "Scenery of Japan to Leave for the 21st Century" public contest held by NHK. On weekends, the steam is illuminated, and the townscape colored with warm lights is fantastically beautiful.
A row of cherry trees is planted along the sloping road, and in spring, you can walk through a tunnel of cherry blossoms to the observatory. You can see a rare and superb view of cherry blossoms and hot spring steam.

Ogiyama Sakura no Sono

Perfect for a cherry blossom viewing drive. A carpet of cherry blossoms that has spread over half a century

Mt. Ohira is commonly known as "Ogi-yama" (Fan Mountain) because its shape resembles an upside-down fan. Every year in early April, the "Ogi-yama Fire Festival," a traditional spring event in Beppu, takes place, and the mountainside is engulfed in flames. Located on the mountainside is the "Ogi-yama Sakura no Sono" (Cherry Blossom Garden). Since the 1970s, cherry trees have been planted in what was originally a wilderness, and over the course of about 50 years, it has become a place where approximately 6,000 cherry trees gather.
Situated at an altitude of about 400 meters, you can overlook Beppu Bay and the Beppu city area through the cherry blossoms. You can enjoy the spring scenery while trekking through the park, or enjoy a scenic drive for cherry blossom viewing. If you visit early in the morning, you might be able to have the spectacular view of the cherry blossoms, the sea, and the sunrise all to yourself.

Beppu Ropeway

Enjoy a spectacular view unique to spring while taking a walk in the sky

Aso Kuju National Park spans Oita and Kumamoto Prefectures. You can reach the summit of Mt. Tsurumi, which is part of the park and stands at an altitude of 1,375 meters, in about 10 minutes using the "Beppu Ropeway." From various spots on the mountain, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of the magnificent scenery, including the cityscape of Beppu, Beppu Bay, and the Kuju mountain range.
In spring, you can see wild cherry trees on the slopes of Mt. Tsurumi while riding the ropeway, and near the summit, you can see Fuji cherry trees, which are considered rare in Kyushu. In addition, at the Tsurumi-dake Nature Park "Shiki no Sato," which spreads out next to the "Beppu Kogen Station" where you board the ropeway, about 2,000 cherry trees, mainly Somei Yoshino, as well as Oshima cherry and button cherry trees, bloom. If you look down from the ropeway, a sea of cherry blossoms in varying shades of pink spreads out below.

Lake Shidaka

A place of relaxation for Beppu citizens where you can also enjoy cherry blossom viewing from the lake

A lake located about a 20-minute drive from the Beppu city center. Situated on a plateau at an altitude of approximately 600m as part of the Aso Kuju National Park, it has long been loved by Beppu citizens as a scenic spot with views of both Mount Yufu and Mount Tsurumi.
In spring, cherry blossoms bloom in profusion around the lake, allowing visitors to enjoy hanami in a relaxed atmosphere. Not only Somei Yoshino, but also Yamazakura and Yaezakura bloom one after another, reaching full bloom a little later than in the lowlands. In addition to laying out a sheet for hanami, the well-maintained walking paths make it perfect for strolling while admiring the cherry blossoms. You can also enjoy hanami from the lake by boat, giving you a resort-like experience.

Cherry blossom-lined path along the Oita River

A cherry blossom viewing spot where you can encounter scenery that symbolizes spring in Yufuin

The area along the Oita River, which flows through the center of Yufuin town, is a perfect course for a cherry blossom viewing stroll. The cherry blossoms usually reach their peak in early April, allowing you to enjoy the scenery that symbolizes spring in Yufuin. We especially recommend the "Nanohana-zutsumi" walking path from "Miyuki Bridge," about a 10-minute walk from Yufuin Station, to "Shiro Bridge" upstream. The sight of cherry blossom-lined paths and rapeseed flowers colorfully set against the backdrop of Mount Yufu, known as "Bungo Fuji," is a spectacular view you cannot miss if you visit Yufuin in spring.
If you continue further upstream from Shiro Bridge, you can also walk to "Kinrinko Lake," one of Yufuin's representative tourist spots. The area gets crowded with tourists during the cherry blossom season, so it is best to stroll early in the morning to avoid the crowds.
