Okinawa Prefecture consists of about 160 islands of various sizes in the waters that stretch between Kyushu and Taiwan. At the center of the island is the main island of Okinawa, the seventh largest island in Japan. The southern part of the island, stretching 110 km from north to south, is home to Naha City, the largest city in Okinawa; the central part has ruins of a castle from the Ryukyu Kingdom era and a U.S. military base; the northern part, with its subtropical forests, has the Churaumi Aquarium; the coastal beaches are home to a number of world-class hotels; and the island offers a myriad of attractions. Many tourists from Japan and abroad visit the island.
The subtropical climate of the main island of Okinawa is warm throughout the year, and the average temperature is 6 to 7°C higher than in metropolitan areas such as Tokyo and Osaka. Winter temperatures are particularly pleasant, with temperatures as high as 10°C (50°F). UV rays are plentiful all year round, and UV protection is essential even in winter and on cloudy days. Also, typhoons frequently approach from July to September, so it is necessary to check typhoon information frequently.
