4Karuizawa Taliesin
Have a blast at this waterfront resort
Karuizawa Taliesin is a leisure facility centered around Lake Shiozawa, featuring art museums, activity facilities, restaurants, and more. Surrounded by the magnificent nature of the changing seasons, it offers a variety of activities for parents and children to enjoy together. On the lake, you can experience rowboats, pedal boats, and bicycle-style water strider boats. Enjoy a 30-minute stroll on the water while admiring the historic buildings that harmonize with the nature and scenery of Karuizawa.
The authentic go-kart course that speeds through the trees and the cycle monorail, where you pedal yourself through the woods, are also popular.
Try the splash balloons for walking on water
At the pool near the go-kart course, the "Splash Balloon," which operates irregularly, is well-received. It is a new type of play equipment where you enter a balloon and walk on the water; it is quite difficult to keep your balance, and rolling around is also fun. It is intended for elementary school students and older. With the large "Splash Roller," which can hold two people, even preschoolers can experience it with their parents. In addition, there are battery-operated cars, kids' archery, bouldering, family golf, and more, making it a spot where you can play all day long.

9Picchio
Experience the great nature of Karuizawa on a nature tour that parents and children can enjoy together
"Picchio" means woodpecker in Italian. With the desire to "preserve the rich forest where woodpeckers live," they hold nature tours and day camps in the national "Karuizawa Wild Bird Forest," which is adjacent to the Hoshino area in Naka-Karuizawa.
The "Wild Bird Forest Nature Watching" is held every day throughout the year. Preschoolers can participate if accompanied by a guardian (no age limit), and many children participate every year. Other popular activities include day camps and river trekking for elementary school students.
A wide range of activities for children during the summer vacation
There are various tours tailored to different age groups, so you can choose a tour that matches your child's age.
For example, the "Explore! First Forest" and "Explore! First River" programs, aimed at families with children aged 3 to 6, support children's first experiences in nature. What is a forest like? What kind of creatures live in the river? You can interact with nature while having fun in a quiz format.
The "Picchio Children's Adventure Club" is a nature experience program for elementary school students. It supports experiences where children can play freely and return a little more resilient through "adventures" such as following animal trails, building secret bases using tree branches, and using their wits and ingenuity in the forest.
*All tours can be booked via the website.
Programs where you can experience the work of protecting and managing Asiatic black bears are also available.
Another notable Picchio activity outside of tours is the conservation and management of Asiatic black bears. Aiming for coexistence between humans and bears, they have been conducting bear behavior research and using bear dogs (bear-deterrent dogs) to drive bears away since 1998. To help children learn about these activities, they also hold a "Bear Conservation Work Experience: Kids Internship" for students in grades 3 through 6. It allows them to learn about coexistence with wildlife while having fun. At the "Picchio Wild Bird Forest Visitor Center," which serves as the tour base, you can also hear explanations about Asiatic black bear conservation and management from nature guides.

12Usui Pass Railway Heritage Park
An interactive railway theme park that conveys the history of the former Usui Line.
This hands-on theme park is sure to satisfy any child who loves trains. You can learn about the history of the "Usui Line," which connected Yokokawa and Karuizawa before being decommissioned in 1997, while enjoying various experiences. Additionally, the Railway Museum features a diorama of the Usui Pass railway, and you can even try your hand at operating HO gauge model trains.
Trolley trains and electric locomotive driving simulators are also popular.
For families with children, we recommend the "Sherpa-kun" trolley train. It uses the former Usui Line's downhill track, allowing you to enjoy a short 20-minute trip to the neighboring day-trip hot spring facility, the Usui Pass Forest Park Exchange Center "Toge no Yu." Within the park, you can also ride the "Green Breeze" steam locomotive or the "Aputo-kun" diesel train, which travel along an 800-meter loop. 15Makiba Karuizawa
Even beginners can enjoy a walk in the forest.
Makiba Karuizawa is an activity spot where you can enjoy horseback riding. Horses raised on vast lands in Hokkaido are kept in pastures here in the same way. Since many of the horses are classified as intermediate breeds and are docile and gentle, they are perfect for beginners.
You can enjoy the "Hokkorii Stroll Course (approx. 50 minutes)" for beginners and the "Relaxed Forest Course (approx. 100 minutes)" for experienced riders. All necessary equipment for horseback riding is available for free rental, so you can visit empty-handed. Rain gear is also provided, so you can feel at ease even on rainy days.
Fun for the whole family.
The popular "Hokkorii Stroll Course" for beginners includes a 20-minute lesson on basic movements such as starting and stopping, followed by a 30-minute horseback ride through the forest. You may travel along forest roads and meadows at the foot of Mount Asama, and sometimes even off the beaten path. Depending on the season and time, you can enjoy the most beautiful scenery and forests of the time you visit. *The "Hokkorii Stroll Course" is available to those aged 9 and older who can operate the reins themselves. Two-person riding is not permitted.
We also hold irregular events such as horseback riding experiences for children aged 9 and under, "lead-line riding experiences" where you can lead a horse from the pasture to the riding arena, and "tack-up/untack experiences."

16Ishida Tourist Farm
Experience harvesting seasonal crops.
This is a tourist farm located in Kitakaruizawa that grows over 50 types of crops on a vast 15,000-tsubo plot of land. You can harvest and eat any of the vegetables and fruits grown on the farm. Furthermore, there is no time limit, so you can take your time strolling through the spacious grounds to find the seasonal delicacies you are looking for. It is also a nice touch that there are shaded rest areas within the farm.
While salt for the vegetables is provided, those who wish to enjoy them with various flavors are welcome to bring their own mayonnaise, miso, or other condiments. Many repeat visitors bring their favorite seasonings to enjoy the harvesting experience.
There are also many processed products such as handmade jam.
The harvesting experience is available for a four-month period from around mid-July to mid-November each year. We grow fruits such as plums, blueberries, peaches, and apples, as well as highland vegetables like tomatoes, eggplants, cucumbers, and cabbage, with admission fees varying depending on what is available for harvest. Seeing how crops grow up close is a special time for children. Through the harvesting experience, their interest in food will also deepen significantly.
In addition, our additive-free, handmade jams and juices made from fruits harvested on the farm, as well as bottled Kitakaruizawa specialty runner beans and simmered runner beans, are perfect as souvenirs.
