【2026】Four recommended sightseeing spots in Hamamatsu in winter.
Hamamatsu City, with its ocean, mountains, rivers, and lakes, has a lot to offer in winter as well, thanks to its long hours of sunlight and mild climate. Here are some recommended spots with winter-only delights, such as spectacular views that can only be seen in winter, illumination of popular sightseeing spots, and mandarin orange picking.
1The red torii gate of Bentenjima
The symbol of Bentenjima, located on Lake Minami Hamana
On Lake Hamana, located in the western part of Hamamatsu City, a bright red Otorii (Grand Gate), about 18 meters high, was built in 1973 on the natural tidal flat "Ikarise" of Bentenjima on Minami Hamana Lake, the lake closest to the sea, and has become a symbol of the lake.
The red torii, which changes its appearance depending on the season, weather, and tide, is an excellent spot for photography. The beauty of the evening view is especially impressive. The mysterious beauty of the red torii gate, which contrasts with the blue water in the daytime, changes from moment to moment to a black silhouette reflected in the setting sun. The view of the setting sun from "Bentenjima Seaside Park" is especially recommended in winter.
A must-see spectacular view that can only be seen in winter
Around one month before and after the winter solstice (mid-November to mid-January), you can see the setting sun over the red torii gate.
In winter, a strong northwesterly monsoon called "Enshu's kara-kaze" blows, so be sure to take warm clothing. There is a hot spring resort nearby, so warming your cold body in a hot spring is also recommended.

4Tangerine Picking Tokura-en
Experience seasonal mandarin oranges picking at a farm overlooking Lake Hamana
Shizuoka Prefecture is known as one of the leading oranges producing areas in Japan, and the oranges from Hamamatsu City are particularly well known for their freshness and good balance of sugar and acidity. The average temperature in Hamamatsu is about 16 degrees Celsius with plenty of sunshine throughout the year, which makes the oranges sweet, and the well-drained soil is also suitable for growing oranges.
All of Tokuraen's mikan fields, located near Lake Hamana, face south and can absorb plenty of Nikko all year round. Moreover, the deep soil allows the roots to spread to the fullest extent, resulting in the growth of thick-trunked mikan trees. The season of harvest is usually from mid-October to mid-December. During this season, mikan picking is available without reservations.

A wide variety of Shizuoka mandarins
Shizuoka mandarins come in many varieties. There are several production areas scattered around Lake Hamana, each with its own characteristics. Mikkaicho mandarins, located north of Lake Hamana, one of the most productive areas in Japan, are so nutritious that in 2015 they were the first fresh food to be accepted for notification as a food with functional claims.
Mikatagahara plateau, which stretches from Tenryu River to Hamana Lake, mandarins are grown in greenhouses under thorough quality control, and are so soft and rich in juice that the inner bag breaks. In a large area including Hamamatsu City and Kosai City, combined cultivation with other crops is carried out, taking advantage of the mild climate and the topography and soil of each area. State-of-the-art machinery has been introduced to produce high-quality oranges.
In this way, mikan farmers continue to use their ingenuity to cultivate their own delicious oranges.
