Various sightseeing trains operate from central Tokyo to Izu. Introducing popular trains
Izu is one of the best resort areas near the Tokyo metropolitan area. Direction by train is also convenient, so trains dedicated to sightseeing are gaining popularity, allowing passengers to enjoy Izu's natural scenery while enjoying food and drinks in the train on the return trip. The Royal Express" by Izu Kyuko Line, which began service in July 2017, and "Saphir Odoriko-go" by East Japan Railway Co. Here are three recommended sightseeing trains that will enliven your travel mood along the way.
1THE ROYAL EXPRESS
THE ROYAL EXPRESS" connecting JR Yokohama Station and Izukyu Shimoda Station began service in July 2017 (Heisei 29). The train has attracted attention for its design by Eiji Mitooka, who has worked on numerous sightseeing trains, including the "NATSUBOSHI in KYUSHU". The train is one of the largest sightseeing trains in Japan, consisting of eight cars, with two classes of carriages: "Gold Class" for No. 1 and No. 2 cars and "Platinum Class" for No. 7 and No. 8 cars.
Car 1 is for families with family seats, a wooden ball pool, a picture book library, etc. Car 2 is a chic space made of walnut with seats for two facing the sea, etc. Cars 7 and 8 are luxurious spaces with traditional crafts such as kumiko work.

2Saphir Odoriko
Sapphire blue shimmer and elegance for a special trip
JR East's "Saphir Odoriko" sightseeing express train, which began operation in March 2020, is attracting attention as a high-quality, elegant way to travel from Tokyo to Izu/Shimoda. Saphir" means sapphire in French. It is inspired by the beauty of Izu's blue sea and sky. The distinctive features of the train are its deep sapphire blue body color, its flowing, angular form, and the skylights installed in all the cars. Designed by world-renowned designer Kiyoyuki Okuyama, the exterior and interior spaces all exude a sense of stylish luxury, allowing passengers to enjoy an elegant ride while traveling.
Comfortable and elegant green seats in all 8 cars
Car 1 is JR East's first "Premium Green. The stand-alone seats are made of genuine leather, providing a private and relaxing space. The seats are luxurious and comfortable. By turning the seat toward the window with the handle above the seat, you can enjoy the magnificent view from your preferred angle.
The "Green Private Rooms" in Cars 2-3 are designed like a café, and are available in two types: one for 1-4 persons and the other for 1-6 persons. The interior decorations are decorated with items reminiscent of the "sea" and "azure" to remind you of your trip to Izu. In the green private room, you can enjoy a cafeteria menu with delivery.
Tantalize your taste buds with a menu supervised by a Michelin-starred restaurant
Car 4 has an open kitchen cafeteria where passengers can order meals and beverages, and from April 2021, a special pasta dish supervised by Chef Tetsuya Honda of "Ristorante HONDA," an Italian restaurant highly rated in the "Michelin Guide Tokyo," will be available. 3RESORT 21
For those who wish to enjoy the scenery of Izu at ease, we recommend the "Resort 21 (Type 2100)" operated by JR East and Izu Kyuko between JR Atami Station and Izu Kyuko Shimoda Station. Seats are unreserved, and a standard fare is required.
The train made its debut in 1985. It is a true pioneer of sightseeing trains, and new cars are debuting as they are put into operation. The asymmetrical layout of the train interior, which was designed with the primary purpose of enjoying the spectacular view of the ocean, is now seen on other sightseeing trains, but it was a big topic of conversation when the train first started operation.
Seats on the ocean side face the window, and the windows are larger on the ocean side. And the first and last cars have observation seats with seats arranged in a staircase, allowing passengers to enjoy panoramic views through large windows in the front and rear.
Panoramic seats lined up side by side facing the sea
Currently, there are two types of cars in operation. One is the "Kurofune Train," painted black to resemble the black ships that came to Shimoda, and the other is the red "Kinme Train," inspired by the kinmedai, Izu's representative fish.
The train runs two to three times a day, and since the seats are unreserved, the most popular seats, such as those facing the windows or the observation seats in the first car, are available first-come, first-served. At the first station, passengers sometimes queue even before the train arrives at the station.

4limited express "Odoriko
The express train that has been loved for more than 40 years and carries the romance of Izu's travel
The Series 185 trains, which have been loved for many years since they started operation in 1981, will regrettably cease regular operation in March 2021. Currently, the train fleet has been unified into the renewed E257 series, and passengers can enjoy a train trip while savoring the charm of the new limited express "Odoriko".
What catches the eye on the car body is its "peninsula blue" hue, which was inspired by the "sky color" and "sea color" of Izu, a region blessed with rich nature. The first car has a diagonal band design, and the photogenic visuals that create a new original landscape along the train line are gaining popularity.
Sophisticated interior with blue as the base color
The interior of the train cars is designed to be quiet and relaxing, and the ride is exceptionally comfortable. The standard car has a standard but modern space with a sense of depth, and the seat motifs are arranged in a sophisticated shade of blue reminiscent of Izu. The scenery from the windows of the cars is varied, and from the ocean-side seats (Seat A side) in particular, passengers can fully enjoy the heartwarming view of the intricate coastline and white waves lapping the shore.
Another nice feature is that all cars are equipped with a power outlet on the window side of the seat. Car 3 has a free space for passengers to relax.
