Recommended lunches within walking distance from Nikko Toshogu Shrine and Nikko Station

Nikko is an area with many atmospheric restaurants and cafes in a historic town including Nikko Toshogu Shrine. Here are some recommended restaurants for lunch to stop by during your sightseeing tour.

NIKKO rice bowl, S size ¥1,836 with sashimi yuba salad and soup

Located in front of Tobu Nikko Station, this café is housed in an old bank building. Western-style dishes such as curry and hamburgers are popular, but the NIKKO rice bowl, which is available in limited quantities, is especially popular.
The secret of its popularity is the abundant use of local ingredients, such as homemade roast beef from "Mae Nikko Wagyu," Nikko's specialty fried rolled yunami, rice from a local contract farmer, and fresh eggs. The roast beef, which is roasted on the surface and vacuum-pressurized at a low temperature, is made from the inner leg of the beef, called shikinbo, and the more you bite into it, the more the flavor of the meat spreads out. It is a perfect match for the melty hot spring egg and subtly sweet fried rolled yunami.

Local Guide Comment
The food is both satisfying and elegant. The balsamic vinegar sauce goes well with the roast beef.

The restaurant is lined with stylish street lamps inside the restaurant.

As the name of the restaurant means "street lamp" in French, the restaurant is lined with stylish street lamps. A large vault from the banking era is also used as an eating and drinking space, with a 20 cm thick door accenting the interior.

Also recommended after lunch are the owner-chef's homemade sweets, of which there are always about 10 varieties available. Tarts made with organic Nikko strawberries and shaved ice made with strawberry puree are very popular desserts that can be enjoyed all year round.

One of the lunch menu "Two-color kuzu somen noodles with tomato and shiso leaves" 1,512 yen

Shizen Saryo Maze is a vegan (100% plant-based) café restaurant based on macrobiotics, located about a 16-minute walk from Tobu Nikko Station along the main street in the direction of Kamibashi. Its cuisine, which focuses on local pesticide-free organic and naturally grown vegetables and brown rice, is valued by the health-conscious.

The "Two-color Kuzu Somen with Tomatoes and Oba Leaves" is a set that includes a salad with the original bright colors of the vegetables and a mushroom soup made with Rishiri kelp. The somen noodles made with kuzu are served in a Genovese style with vinegar, shiso leaves, and basil, and the mild acidity of the tomatoes adds a refreshing touch. The salad is made with fresh vegetables purchased directly from local farmers, such as green peppers, shishito peppers, korinky (raw pumpkin), and okahijiji, which bring the original flavor of the ingredients to life. *Vegetable variety changes with the seasons.

Local Guide Comment
This is the kind of restaurant you want to come to when you want to eat delicious vegetables. It is a popular restaurant, so we recommend making a reservation in advance or staggering the time.

The quaint Japanese-modern interior

The store was formerly an antique art gallery and has been renovated to create a modern Japanese-style space that makes the most of its more than 100-year-old architecture.
Sweets have a gentle taste and are made with natural, plant-based ingredients without eggs, dairy products, or gelatin. The coffee is home-roasted using chrysanthemum charcoal (charcoal used in the tea ceremony), which has a strong and stable flame, and can be enjoyed in combination with the coffee. Organic herbal tea, organic rooibos tea, and other caffeine-free drinks are also available for those who want to relax with natural food and a retro atmosphere.

Located in the lush green Nikko Sannai area, the Western-style stone building has a late Meiji period style. Visitors can enjoy traditional Western-style cuisine in this high quality building that tells the history of the area.
Nikko, a summer resort for foreigners since the Meiji era (1868-1912), was one of the first places where Western food culture blossomed. At Meiji-no-Yakata, the chef's skillful techniques have created a delicate and elegant dish of the traditional Western cuisine that has been nurtured in Nikko.

The popular "Omelette Rice" is a luxurious dish of chicken rice topped with a soft, half-boiled egg and a whole tiger prawn. The demi-glace sauce, which is simmered at a constant temperature for 24 hours and then strained many times for a smooth finish, is a unique delicacy with a pleasant, slightly bitter, adult taste.

In addition, the 100% beef hamburger steak is also a firm favorite. The juices from the meat and the demi-glace sauce, the restaurant's specialty, intertwine to create a delicious taste that lingers in the mouth. The restaurant also has an open terrace where you can enjoy your meal in an open space surrounded by greenery.

Local Guide Comment
The chicken rice is filled with plump shrimp! The view of the garden from the window and the atmosphere inside the restaurant are great, allowing you to enjoy your meal in a relaxed atmosphere.

A villa built in the American architectural style

Stylish space reminiscent of the Meiji era
Stylish space reminiscent of the Meiji era

The historic Western-style house, a registered tangible cultural property, was originally the villa of F.W. Horn, an American who focused on the manufacture and sale of phonographs and records in Japan. It was built in the American architectural style of "balloon frame construction," characterized by spaciousness and the absence of large pillars. The walls are piled with Nikko stones using the "Ranre-ishi masonry" technique, which also incorporates the skills of Nikko's master craftsmen.

Since the building was constructed in the Meiji era, when glass manufacturing technology was still in its infancy, the glass is slightly distorted, giving the scenery a unique appearance of gently swaying.

Pizza with homemade smoked bacon and Nikko maitake mushrooms (with salad, drink, and dessert) 1,200 yen

Located in front of Tamozawa Imperial Villa Memorial Park, this restaurant offers oven-baked pizza. The dough made from "Yumekaori," a strong flour produced in Tochigi Prefecture, is exquisitely sweet and salty, and when baked at once in the 450 degree oven, the crispy outside and chewy inside are irresistibly delicious. The photo shows the most popular menu item, which is made with a generous amount of olive-marinated maitake mushrooms from Nikko and home-smoked bacon from Nikko HIMITSU Pork. The smooth texture of mozzarella cheese and appetizing garlic flavor are also appealing.

The open and bright restaurant was built by the owner himself.

The friendly owner, a former carpenter, built an oven at home and taught himself how to make delicious pizza. 4 years later, in 2017, he opened Pizza Rinne. He constructed the entire restaurant himself. The materials for the large pizza oven were imported directly from Italy. The interior design was based on his wife's opinions, using white and soft colors to create a bright space that is easy for women to enter.
The restaurant specializes in pizzas, which are popular among the locals, so it is recommended to come early before the dough runs out. Some items on the menu can also be taken out.
