7 recommended cafes in Furano, Biei, and Tomamu
Furano, Biei, and Tomamu are popular as some of the best sightseeing spots in Hokkaido. In recent years, the number of unique and stylish cafes in these areas has been increasing. We will introduce you to cafes that will make your trip more enjoyable and colorful, such as those that boast cuisine made with local ingredients, cafes in traditional Japanese houses where you can relax, and cafes with spectacular views where you can enjoy the magnificent scenery.
1cafe goryo
Handmade café in a renovated 90-year-old farmhouse barn.
About 15 minutes by car from JR Furano Station. In the Kamigoryo district, surrounded by greenery, you will find a store with a red roof. Using vegetables grown on their own farm, the owner and his wife, who have traveled around the world, have rearranged and recreated dishes that they have enjoyed in various countries. The "daily special rice," which changes daily and includes six different types such as tomato curry, chili beans, and loco moco, and the "goryo sandwich," a sandwich of seasonal vegetables and cream cheese in a homemade chapata, are healthy and meat-free, but are known for their robust taste and volume.
Retro interior with a sense of old Furano
Originally a farmer's barn built in 1929. The owner and his wife, with the help of a carpenter, repaired the barn, which was on the verge of collapse, and renovated it into a café. After taking off your shoes on the earthen floor, you enter the barn, where the exposed beams are still there, creating a warm, retro atmosphere reminiscent of Furano in the olden days. Up a steep staircase, there is also seating on the second floor. Next to the cafe is a guesthouse, with a kitchen and other facilities available for free use, and women-only rooms are also available.

2halu CAFÉ
Delicacies made from Furano's bounty
The name of the restaurant "halu" is an Ainu word meaning "food blessed by nature. The owner and his wife, who moved from Tokyo, are former orchestra players, and are proud of their cooking based on the many tastes they have encountered while traveling around the world for performances. The carbonara made with fresh Furano wheat Haruyutaka pasta is accented with the delicious flavor of homemade pancetta, which takes a month to prepare. Chicken curry with plenty of Furano onions, German-style Dutch baby pancakes with homemade jam made from local fruits and vegetables, and more are just some of the "halu" of Furano.
A luxurious space to enjoy the slow flow of time
The "halu CAFÉ" is tucked away in the middle of a gently sloping hillside. Beyond the large windows, vineyards and lavender fields spread out against the backdrop of the majestic Tokachi Mountain Range, offering a richly colorful view from season to season. Time seems to flow slowly as you savor Furano's natural beauty with your eyes and taste buds and enjoy conversation with the friendly owner and his wife. A grand piano is placed in the restaurant, and mini-concerts are held on an irregular basis. A satisfying time awaits you no matter when you visit.
3Kaneko coffee beans
The aroma of coffee welcomes you to the barn café.
A house cafe in the middle of a field in Kamifurano. The interior of the renovated farm barn has a nostalgic and tasteful atmosphere, with a dynamic view of Furano stretching out beyond the windows. The adjoining container is used as a coffee roastery, and visitors can observe the large 30 kg roasting kettle. The coffee is popular for its home-roasted beans named after the local area, such as "Daisetsuzan Blend (deep roasted)," "Furano Blend (medium roasted)," and "Asahidake Blend (shallow roasted).
A wide variety of food items made with the finest ingredients and cooking methods.
In addition to coffee, a wide variety of food items such as pasta, hamburgers, curry, and cakes are also popular. The roast pork, in particular, is a juicy dish made with "Shiretoko pork" and "Kamifurano pork" and prepared slowly over a period of two hours to highlight the sweetness of the fat. Bread baked daily using Hokkaido wheat is also very popular. In addition to the original baguette menu, take-out lunch boxes are also available, along with drinks, so we recommend enjoying a leisurely outdoor lunch on a sunny day.

The eggs and vegetables are also all grown in the suburbs, and each ingredient has a distinct flavor. Soraniwa Farm Cafe with a magnificent view
This farm café is run by the owner of a popular pension in Biei, "Zawazawamura in Spoon Valley. It took the landmen (farmers) working on the farm two years to build and opened in May 2018. The star of the cuisine is seasonal vegetables grown in the 6h large field in front of the restaurant. Together with ingredients from local farms and workshops, the chef, who has an Italian background, takes time and effort to create a dish of his own. The delicatessen-style one-plate menu, in which you can choose your favorite combination from a menu that changes daily, is a must-try dish.
Deli plates filled with the bounty of the earth are popular!
The café's location on the company's own farm on a vast hillside with a 360-degree panoramic view is so luxurious that it could be called an empty garden. The log house-style exterior is impressive, with its wooden armor cladding reminiscent of the good old days on the frontier. The interior of the restaurant, with its painted walls and antique bricks, is also beautiful. The counter seats facing the window are prime seats from which to enjoy the spectacular view of the four seasons.
