Hakone marquetry is a craft that is appropriate for Japan, one of the most forested countries in the world. This advanced technique, which is also a nationally designated "traditional handicraft," is said to have been started by Nihei Ishikawa in Hatajuku, Hakone, about 200 years ago. The intricate patterns expressed in the colors and bark of various tree species are truly an art form.
At Hamamatsuya, whose ancestors are said to have been the grandfather of Ishikawa Nihei, visitors will find a wide range of products, including "secret boxes," which have long been popular, and tea caddies made using the traditional technique of zukubashi, in which a geometric pattern of marquetry is cut down to a thickness of 0.2 mm and pasted on the wood. Each item is unique in terms of color and pattern, and you can find one to your liking.

On the second floor of the store, there is a "visible factory" where you can actually see Hakone marquetry being made. The seventh generation head of the shop, who is also a "traditional craftsman," explains and shows you the whole process from actually gathering the wood to shaving it with a plane to make "zuku-beri," a very thin layer of wood. Visitors can also learn about techniques such as "moku-zogan" (wood inlay), which is a technique of wood painting, and "muku-zukuri" (solid woodworking), in which a seed board is processed as it is.

Located about a 10-minute drive east from Hakone-Yumoto Station, along the Hayakawa River just before it flows into Sagami Bay, this gallery shop is run by “Tsuyuki Woodworks,” which has carried on the tradition of “Hakone Yosegi-zaiku” (wood inlay craftsmanship).Guided by the concept of “creating a culture of daily life,” the shop offers items that make life more enjoyable, beautiful, and convenient. You’ll discover stylish pieces that seamlessly blend into modern living, such as the “Agoshi,” a convenient container for storing small items. From the objets d’art displayed on the walls to the tables inside the shop, it’s a space that’s a pleasure to simply browse.

The founder of “Tsuyuki Woodworks” studied under the grandson of Ishikawa Nihei, the founder of “Hakone Yosegi-zaiku.”Today, the third- and fourth-generation father-and-son team create works while exploring new creative directions. By reinterpreting traditional techniques—which typically highlight the natural colors of wood—with a fresh perspective, they deliberately experiment with monochromatic color schemes and use wide, generously sized pieces of wood joined together to express a sense of dynamism, making their items highly popular.
At Hoshino Resorts KAI Hakone, you can enjoy a variety of contemporary items and designs created in collaboration with “Tsuyuki Woodworks” in the lobby, the KAI Signature Rooms “Hakone Yosegi-no-Ma” room, and on the dining tableware.

A wide variety of original accessories and wooden goods with a gentle touch.
This old-fashioned house-style general merchandise store stands along Ajisai-zaka slope just after getting off at Miyanoshita Station. The glass doors offer a clear view of the store's interior, and the warmth of the cute knick-knacks lures customers into the store. The selection is centered on items made by artists in Hakone and Odawara, with rounded wooden cutlery, toys, and other items that catch the eye. Other items include key chains, accessories, and picture postcards, all of which are tastefully selected by the owner. It is also a great place to find casual souvenirs for friends.

Next to the store is a footbath and a café, where you can enjoy a menu ordered at the café in a window seat inside the "Narayaan" store. The space where the footbath is located used to be an employee dormitory of "Naraya Ryokan," a famous ryokan in Miyanoshita. The former sushi restaurant next to it was renovated and this restaurant was opened.
Miyanoshita is a place associated with the "Odawara Conquest. The symbol of the restaurant is a gourd associated with the horse mark of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and there are original items such as sundries with this motif and wooden vessels with the mark engraved on them.

4Komamonoya Hakone
You can find arts and crafts unique to Hakone, including works by local artists.
Gora Park, Japan's first French-style landscaped garden, is also known for its flowers. This select store opened in the summer of 2019 on the second floor of the main building of Hakone Craft House, which is located in the park full of greenery. The lineup, which spotlights local artists, features items unique to Hakone that cannot be found anywhere else. The "Hakone Boxes," palm-sized small boxes, are original items with illustrations of Hakone events and scenes from the four seasons by illustrators. There are 10 different illustrations, and you can choose from about 10 different types of contents, including kompeito sugar and tea. It is recommended that you buy a commemorative gift for each time of year you visit.
A full lineup of familiar and easy-to-use interior goods
Inside the store, you will find many small items such as original glass vases and glass flower holders that are also great as interior decorations. Coasters and hair bands made of Hakone marquetry by young craftsmen are great gifts for yourself or for friends.
The Hakone Craft House and several ateliers in the park offer a variety of Experience classes in glass crafts, ceramics, and other arts. Full-time craftspeople are on hand to assist visitors with their creations, so you can try your hand at making a handmade souvenir.

Japanese sundries to enjoy the four seasons at a small store along the path!
Located on a small street one street back from the shopping street in front of Hakone-Yumoto Station, it is recommended for those who want to examine souvenirs in a quiet and relaxing space. The shop is filled with Japanese sundries with seasonal patterns based on the theme of harmony. The most popular item is the original kinchaku (purse) made by arranging the fabric used to wrap bento lunches. It is reversible, so you can use it according to the season or your mood. Fuji, hot spring buns, and kamaboko (fish cake). The owner himself created the illustrations for the three patterns, and a "Hakone cat" appears in one of the pictures. They are popular for their cuteness.
A variety of stationery and sundries to make you feel relaxed!
Lightweight and not bulky, "bamboo bookmarks" are ideal as souvenirs for friends. Made by Takano Bamboo Works in Nagaokakyo City, Kyoto Prefecture, all 10 patterns are original. In addition to the heart-tugging designs, the delicate colors are made with great care. Paperback book covers with a gentle touch and accessories using tenugui are also hot sellers. The seasonal patterned accessories that adorn the store are changed every three months to reflect the next season's patterns, so you can find something new every time you visit.
