"Hakone Yosegi-zaiku" (marquetry) is a craft befitting Japan, one of the world's leading forest nations. Its sophisticated techniques, which are also designated as a "Traditional Craft" by the national government, are said to have been started about 200 years ago by Nihei Ishikawa in Hatajuku, Hakone. The intricate patterns expressed through the colors and textures of various wood species are truly art.
At "Hamamatsuya," whose ancestor was Nihei Ishikawa, you can find the long-popular "Himitsu-bako" (puzzle boxes) and tea caddies made using the traditional "Zuku-bari" technique, where geometric marquetry patterns are shaved to a thickness of 0.2mm and applied to the surface. Each piece has its own unique color and pattern, so you are sure to find one you love.

On the second floor of the shop, there is a "visible workshop" where you can see the actual process of making "Hakone Yosegi-zaiku." The seventh-generation owner, who is also a "Traditional Craftsman," explains the entire process, from joining the wood to shaving it into ultra-thin sheets with a plane to create "Zuku-bari." You can also learn about techniques such as "Moku-zogan" (wood inlay) and "Muku-zukuri" (solid wood construction), and after the tour, you will feel even closer to "Hakone Yosegi-zaiku."

Located about a 10-minute drive east from Hakone-Yumoto Station, this gallery shop is situated along the Hayakawa River just before it reaches Sagami Bay. It is operated by "Tsuyuki Woodworking," which has inherited the techniques of "Hakone Yosegi-zaiku." With the concept of "creating a lifestyle culture," they propose items that make life fun, beautiful, and convenient. You can encounter sophisticated goods that blend into modern life, such as "Gosu" (small lidded containers) that are convenient for storing small items. It is a space that is enjoyable just to look at, with objects displayed on the walls and tables throughout the shop.

The first generation of "Tsuyuki Woodworking" studied under the grandson of Nihei Ishikawa, the founder of "Hakone Yosegi-zaiku" (marquetry). Currently, the third and fourth generations, a parent and child, create works while exploring new charms. By taking a reverse approach to the traditional technique that utilizes the natural colors of wood, they have challenged themselves with monotone color schemes and created popular items that express a sense of dynamism by using wide, large-patterned wood blocks.
At KAI Hakone, you can enjoy various contemporary items and designs created in collaboration with "Tsuyuki Woodworking" in the lobby, the local "Hakone Yosegi Room," and in the tableware used for meals.

Located right after getting off at Miyanoshita Station, this folk-house-style general store stands along Ajisai-zaka (Hydrangea Slope). Since you can easily see inside the shop through the glass door, you will find yourself drawn into the store by the warm and cute accessories. The selection focuses on items by artists from Hakone and Odawara, with rounded wooden cutlery and toys catching the eye. Other items such as keychains, accessories, and postcards are all tasteful pieces carefully selected by the owner. It is also perfect for finding casual souvenirs for friends.

Next to the shop, there is also a footbath and a cafe, and you can enjoy the menu ordered at the cafe at the window seats inside the "Naraya-an" shop. The space with the footbath is where the employee dormitory of the "Naraya Ryokan," which was once famous as a prestigious inn in Miyanoshita, used to be. This shop opened after renovating the former sushi restaurant next to it.
Miyanoshita is a place associated with the "Siege of Odawara." The gourd, named after Toyotomi Hideyoshi's horse insignia, is the symbol of the area, and there are original items such as miscellaneous goods with that motif and wooden tableware engraved with the mark.

Gora Park is Japan's first French-style formal garden and is also known as a famous spot for flowers. This select shop opened in the summer of 2019 on the second floor of the main building of Hakone Craft House, which stands within the lush green park. The lineup, which spotlights local artists, consists entirely of unique Hakone items that cannot be found anywhere else. The palm-sized small box, "Hakone-bako," is an original item featuring illustrations by an illustrator depicting Hakone events and seasonal scenes. There are 10 types of illustrations, and you can choose your favorite contents from about 10 options, such as konpeito (sugar candy) or tea. We also recommend collecting them as a memento each time you visit.

Inside the store, there are many lovely small items that make great interior decorations, such as original glass vases and glass flower frogs. Located on a side street one block behind the shopping street in front of Hakone-Yumoto Station, this shop is recommended when you want to carefully select souvenirs in a quiet and calm space. With a Japanese theme, Japanese-style miscellaneous goods featuring seasonal patterns are lined up in every available space. The most popular item is an original drawstring bag made by arranging fabric used for bento wraps. Since it is reversible, you can use it according to the season or your mood. Among them, the three patterns of Mt. Fuji, hot spring manju, and kamaboko (fish cake) were designed by the owner himself, and the "Hakoneko" (Hakone cat) character, a play on the word Hakone, appears in the illustrations. They are well-received for being adorable.

Lightweight and compact, the "Bamboo Bookmark" is perfect as a souvenir for friends. Made by "Takano Chikko" in Nagaokakyo City, Kyoto Prefecture, all 10 patterns are original. Beyond their charming designs, they are crafted with a meticulous focus on delicate color tones.
