Sky Berry", the pride of Tochigi Prefecture

Tochigi Prefecture boasts an impressive track record of ranking first in Japan for strawberry production for 57 consecutive years. It has also held the top spot for cultivated area for 24 consecutive years, and as evidence of this, you can see strawberry farms everywhere you go while traveling through the prefecture.

The history of strawberry cultivation in Tochigi Prefecture is said to have begun in the Showa 20s, when strawberries were first grown in Ashikaga City and Utsunomiya City.Since then, prefecture-wide research and development efforts—including seedling-raising techniques such as “high-altitude seedling cultivation” and the development of cultivation facilities—have borne fruit, leading to the creation of the “Nyohou” variety in 1985 (Showa 60) and the “Tochiotome” variety in 1996, which boasts large berries and excellent flavor.Today, the prefecture has established itself as one of the nation’s leading strawberry-producing regions. Even now, research into new varieties and cultivation techniques continues, centered around the “Strawberry Research Institute”—Japan’s only research institution dedicated exclusively to strawberries, located in Tochigi City—ensuring a level of quality befitting the title “Strawberry Kingdom.”

When it comes to varieties representative of Tochigi Prefecture, “Tochiaika”—which has gained popularity in recent years as a flagship variety—stands out for its low acidity and distinctive sweetness. In addition, there is the long-standing favorite “Tochiotome,” with its exquisite balance of intense sweetness and just the right amount of tartness; “Skyberry,” known for its large, beautiful conical shape, lustrous reddish-orange color, and rich juice that fills your mouth;“Tochihime,” often called the “phantom strawberry” because its soft flesh makes it unsuitable for distribution but offers a rich flavor unique to fully ripened fruit; and “Natsuotome,” which can be harvested even during the summer and fall—typically off-season—are just a few examples of the diverse array of distinctive varieties available.Being able to enjoy a variety of strawberries year-round is truly a unique charm of Tochigi, the “Strawberry Kingdom.”

Among the many sweets stores in the prefecture, we have selected seven stores where you can find specialty sweets using abundant fresh strawberries produced in the prefecture. We introduce a mix of Japanese and Western sweets, from stores with stylish cafes where you can relax, to take-out stores where you can quickly purchase them as souvenirs.

This long-established confectionery store is very popular for its special dumplings made with koshihikari rice flour from Tochigi Prefecture twice a day, morning and afternoon. In addition to dumplings, there is also a lineup of rice crackers and Japanese sweets.
At the Takehira Tea House, which is attached to the store, you can taste freshly made sweet dumplings. From January to mid-March, "Heart-shaped Strawberry Dumpling" with two L-size "Tochiotome" on top is available for purchase. The bean paste differs from the usual "koshi-an" (sweet red bean paste) in that it is made from Tebo-mame (dried beans) and mixed with strawberry sauce. The chewy texture of the dumpling and the juicy strawberries are a perfect quartet of flavors. The ease of eating the dumpling with a skewer and the cute visual of sliced strawberries are also secrets to its popularity among men and women of all ages. We also recommend the "Strawberry Daifuku," which contains a whole 5L-sized extra-large "Skyberry" that was jointly developed with a farmer.
