Check out Hamamatsu's four seasons, temperature and clothing!
Located halfway between Tokyo and Osaka, Hamamatsu is an area rich in nature, with the Sea of Enshu to the south, the Akaishi Mountains consisting of 3,000-meter-high mountains to the north, and Lake Hamana to the west. The following is a summary of the temperature and clothing for your excursion.
Hamamatsu's Four Seasons, Temperature and Clothing
The average annual temperature is 16.6°C, about 1°C higher than Tokyo, and the area is known for its mild climate and long hours of sunshine. From spring to fall, the long hours of sunlight make the area feel warmer than Tokyo, but in winter, when the monsoon, known as "Enshu's kara-kaze," blows over the plains, the temperature feels cooler than it actually is.
Spring (March to May) Temperatures and Clothing
In March, it is still cold, with a minimum temperature of around 6°C and a maximum temperature of around 15°C, 0.5 to 1°C higher than in Tokyo.
In April, the average temperature rises to 14.4°C, and the maximum temperature exceeds 20°C on many days. During the day, a jacket or light cardigan will suffice, but the lowest temperatures are around 10°C in April and 15°C in May, so if you plan to stay overnight or go sightseeing in the morning and evening, it is advisable to prepare a top that can be layered under your jacket.
Summer (June-August) Temperatures and Clothing
In summer, Hamamatsu offers a wide variety of outdoor activities such as swimming in the sea, water sports at Hamana Lake, and trekking in the mountains.
The average temperature in June is 22.5℃. In July and August, the temperature rises to over 30°C, the same as in Tokyo, and even a sleeveless or short-sleeved shirt will make you sweat. In the mountains in particular, temperatures can be among the highest in Japan due to the foehn phenomenon, so be sure to bring a change of clothes and a towel to wipe the sweat off your face. If you go to places such as Ryugaiwa-do Cave, which is cool even in summer, do not forget to bring a jacket. We also recommend that you prepare a light jacket to avoid getting sick from the temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the outside.
Autumn (September to November) Temperatures and Clothing
Hamamatsu enjoys long hours of sunshine and is one of the nation's top producers of vegetables and fruits. Fruit picking is popular in Hamamatsu, and visitors can enjoy harvesting apples, akebi (Japanese apricots), tangerines, and other fruits.
The average temperature in September, which is sometimes called "Midsummer Day," is 24.6℃. The average temperature in October is 19.8℃. In November, the maximum temperature never rises above 20°C, and the minimum temperature is sometimes below 10°C, making for chilly days.
The autumn foliage usually begins in the mountains of the Tenryu area in early November, and the best viewing time is from late November at Hamamatsu Castle Park, Tateyama-ji Temple, and other places of interest in the south. If you go to Myojinkyo or other areas in the Tenryu area to see the autumn leaves, be sure to prepare a coat, as the minimum temperature often drops below 5°C (41°F). Even in urban areas, it is advisable to bring knitwear to cope with sudden cold temperatures in November.
Winter (December to February) Temperatures and Clothing
In addition to still being able to enjoy fruit picking such as strawberry and mandarin orange picking, Hamamatsu in winter is also filled with many events such as illumination.
Although there is almost no snowfall in Hamamatsu, a strong northwesterly monsoon called "Enshu's wind blows over the plains, making it feel colder than the actual temperature. Especially on the ocean side where "Nakatajima Dunes" and other places are located, you may experience strong winds, so be sure to prepare a coat, down jacket, scarf, gloves, knit hat, etc. to block the wind.
Average temperatures in the city are in the single digits; in January and February, the average minimum temperature is below 3°C (37°F), with some days even below freezing. As in Tokyo, dress warmly for this time of year.
