1Hamamatsuya
Artwork inherited from the founder of Hakone marquetry
Hakone marquetry is a craft that is appropriate for Japan, one of the most forested countries in the world. This advanced technique, which is also a nationally designated "traditional handicraft," is said to have been started by Nihei Ishikawa in Hatajuku, Hakone, about 200 years ago. The intricate patterns expressed in the colors and bark of various tree species are truly an art form.
At Hamamatsuya, whose ancestors are said to have been the grandfather of Ishikawa Nihei, visitors will find a wide range of products, including "secret boxes," which have long been popular, and tea caddies made using the traditional technique of zukubashi, in which a geometric pattern of marquetry is cut down to a thickness of 0.2 mm and pasted on the wood. Each item is unique in terms of color and pattern, and you can find one to your liking.
The workshop on the second floor where you can see a close-up demonstration by a master craftsman.
On the second floor of the store, there is a "visible factory" where you can actually see Hakone marquetry being made. The seventh generation head of the shop, who is also a "traditional craftsman," explains and shows you the whole process from actually gathering the wood to shaving it with a plane to make "zuku-beri," a very thin layer of wood. Visitors can also learn about techniques such as "moku-zogan" (wood inlay), which is a technique of wood painting, and "muku-zukuri" (solid woodworking), in which a seed board is processed as it is.

2Yosegi Gallery Tsuyuki
Stylish Hakone marquetry that can be enjoyed stylishly in your daily life.
The gallery store is located along the Hayagawa River just before Sagami Bay, about a 10-minute drive east from Hakone-Yumoto Station. The shop is run by Roki Mokuzakusho, a company that has inherited the Hakone marquetry technique. Under the concept of "creating lifestyle culture," the shop proposes items that make life more enjoyable, beautiful, and convenient. You will find highly sensitive items that blend in with today's lifestyle, such as the "Yosegi Smartphone Speaker" with its modern curves and the "Mouse Pad" that adds warmth of wood to an inorganic desk. The objects on the walls and tables in the store are a joy to behold.
Artistic and modern items are lined up in the store.
The first generation of "Roki Mokkosho" studied under the grandson of Nihei Ishikawa, the founder of Hakone marquetry. Now, the third and fourth generation father and son are creating works while developing new charms. The "Kaku-bon Long" is a monotone tray that dares to take the traditional technique of using natural wood colors and turn it on its head to create a monotone color scheme. The cups that express a sense of dynamism by using wide and large pieces of wood are also very popular.
At Hoshino Resorts KAI Hakone, you can enjoy a variety of contemporary items and designs created in collaboration with "Roki Mokkosho" in the lobby, in the KAI Signature Rooms "Hakone Yosegi no Ma" (Hakone Yosegi Rooms), and in the dishes served in the restaurant.
