Nikko and Kinugawa sightseeing spots that can be enjoyed even in the rain! Introducing attractions that everyone can enjoy!
Nikko and Kinugawa are places where you can enjoy sightseeing and gourmet food to the fullest, but sometimes the weather is downhill or it rains suddenly. For those times when the weather is downhill or it suddenly rains, we will introduce some recommended local spots.
We will introduce you to some of the best deals on indoor properties and new ways to have fun, even on rainy days.
1Nikko Hanaichimonme
Get in touch with pretty flowers in the large greenhouse.
Nikko Hanaichimonme" has two large greenhouses where visitors can enjoy flowers all year round, as well as many begonias and small animals. Depending on the season, there are also a variety of activities such as strawberry picking and crawfishing. Although the park has outdoor Properties, it also offers a full range of indoor facilities, making it possible to enjoy the park even in the rain.
After purchasing a ticket and entering the grounds, visitors are greeted by a large glass greenhouse filled with colorful begonias. Since begonias are native to the Andes region of South America, the temperature in the greenhouse is kept between 15°C and 25°C all year round. This makes for cool summers and warm winters.
Various types of begonias, including those hanging from the ceiling and bulbous types, are in full bloom. Among them, the staff/staff members are especially proud of the begonias that have never withered and bloomed in the 18 years (as of 2019) since the opening, a testament to their love and dedication.
Not just flowers, but other specialties
The Dining Area, located just past the entrance on the left, offers a casual place to rest surrounded by flowers.
Since the director is from Ibaraki Prefecture, we recommend the handmade soba noodles made from "Hitachi-Aki soba," a specialty of Ibaraki Prefecture.
If you need a break, try something sweet.
The unique soft-serve ice cream made from begonias is highly recommended, but the Staff/staff member's top recommendation is "Ichigokko. This is a sweet treat made from shaved frozen Tochiotome strawberries topped with condensed milk, and is a must-try in the summer.
Indoor Activities for Children
In addition to flowers, there are also activities such as a treasure hunt and a space with small animals.
A variety of small animals are kept here, ranging from rare animals such as the woolly bear and the Kedzumeuri tortoise to rabbits, squirrels, and chicks. Some animals can be fed for 100 yen, so even small children can enjoy feeding them.
Outside, there is an athletic field, a barbecue area, and a crawfish fishing pond, so you can stop by on a sunny day and have fun.
Strawberry picking season is also a great time to visit
A short walk down the hill from the begonia greenhouse and across the road is a spot where visitors can enjoy seasonal strawberry picking. The varieties available here are "Tochiotome" and "Yayohime.
The strawberry picking season is usually from mid-December to the end of May.

2Torikku Artpia Nikko
Trick art space for photogenic photos
This indoor Property is located near Edo Wonderland (Nikko Edomura) and the giant maze.
The museum has no windows and trick art on the walls, creating a very mysterious atmosphere. This makes it a perfect place to take pictures for Instagram and Facebook.
For Instagram, etc.
Inside the building is a museum of trick art. If you want to be an angel, for example, be sure to try your hand at interesting photos. It might even look real.
You can take a picture of yourself in the middle of a waterfall, peeking into a toilet, or even taking a picture that makes you look like you are exploring the inside of an Egyptian pyramid.
Since it looks better as trick art when you take a picture with a person in it than when you actually see it, time passes quickly as you try different angles and take test shots.
With animals even on a rainy day?
On the second floor, there are many animal trick art pieces.
There is a stand so that you can take pictures with your children, and vegetable toys and paper pop-ups are available as props. The attraction is that you can take photos with a realistic feeling, as if you are right next to the animals.

Relax in a stylish space by the water.
It is about a 5-minute walk from Kinugawa hot spring station. Located across the road from Kinugawa Park Hotels, the stylish café is the MIZUBE NO CAFE TERRACE.
Inside the restaurant, relaxing music is played, and it is a recommended spot to take a break while enjoying the view of the pond spread out before you. On rainy days, watching the ripples of raindrops on the pond is an elegant experience.
The service will end as soon as it is gone. Proudly serve curry and rice
Since its opening in 2003, MIZUBE NO CAFE TERRACE has been serving a very popular curry and rice dish.
The curry rice, which used to be limited to 10 servings a day, quickly sold out, so the number of servings has been increased little by little.
Kids' space where you can relax with your children
To allow not only adults but also those with children to relax, there are children's chairs, a kids' space, and a diaper changing area.
The menu also includes a "children's lunch plate," so you can come with your family.
Colorful carp swim in the pond. You can buy food for the carp (100 yen) from a vending machine inside the cafe, so you may enjoy feeding the carp.

4Katayama Sake Brewery
Nikko's long-established sake brewery with a selection of valuable sake
Founded in 1880, Nikko's sake brewery has a long history and is currently headed by the sixth generation of the family. The brewery has been making sake with the same well water and specially selected rice that has gushed out of the brewery since the Meiji era, and with great care under the motto of "brewing sake that major sake brewers cannot produce.
Katayama Shuzo's Daiginjo "Sogao" won a gold medal at the National New Sake Competition (2016) and has been attracting a lot of attention.
You can read more about the brewery's secrets in this article.
Gold medal-winning daiginjo
The "true face" of the gold medal-winning daiginjo.
This daiginjo is made from specially selected rice from Hyogo's A Special Zone, and due to limited quantities of rice, this valuable sake runs out of stock every year. It is recommended for those who love sake.
Adult sweets are also available.
In addition to Daiginjo "Sake Face," the company also produces a variety of other types of sake, and is also passionate about making sweets using sake. Among them, we recommend the "Sake Cake. When you eat it, the aroma of sake spreads in your mouth, and at the same time, the moderate sweetness of the cake makes it a mature cake that lingers in your mouth. However, since it contains 1% alcohol, it should be avoided by children and pregnant or nursing mothers.
It is a perfect souvenir as it keeps for about two months.
A tour of the brewery is available with advance notice. Reservations can be made through the official website or by phone.
