A trip to learn about the ecology and conservation activities of the Iriomote wildcat, which lives only in Iriomote Island
The Iriomote wildcat lives only on Iriomote Island (Iriomotejima) in Okinawa Prefecture. Because its population is extremely small and it is listed as a national special natural treasure and an endangered species, many people are working together to protect it. Why not take a trip to deepen your understanding of how the Iriomote wildcat lives and what kind of protection activities are being carried out?
What is the Iriomote wildcat?
Iriomote wildcat is endemic to Iriomote Island.
The body size is about the same as a common Iriomote wild cat
The Iriomote wildcat, which lives only on Iriomote Island in the Yaeyama Islands of Okinawa Prefecture, is a member of the cat family. It is characterized by its overall spotted pattern, thick tail, wide snout, rounded ear tips, white lines around the eyes, and long body and short legs. The average head and body length is approximately 50 to 60 cm, and the average weight is around 4 kg, with males being slightly larger.
They are not afraid of water and can be seen diving into the water to catch fish. Compared to other cats, they are characterized by a diverse diet.
Its main habitat is the lowland area where food is abundant.
They feed on various animals from birds such as the white-spotted rail to insects and bats.
The Iriomote wildcat inhabits widely in Iriomote Island, and it is said that it especially prefers lowland areas from the foot of mountains to the coast. This is because this area is rich in water environment and vegetation, and they can find abundant creatures to feed. They are nocturnal, called "twilight-dusk type," and the time when they are active is said to be mainly at dawn or dusk.
From time to time, "Beware of Iriomote wildcat jumping out" signs are placed everywhere on the roads of Iriomote Island. Be careful because Iriomote wildcat, like other cats, acts alone and sometimes jumps out onto the road during the daytime.

Wildlife most threatened with extinction
They often appear in wetlands around mangrove forests
The Iriomote wildcat is listed as an endangered species in the Ministry of the Environment's Fourth Red List of Threatened Species, Class IA. In 2007, the Iriomote wildcat was moved from Endangered Species IB, indicating the deterioration of its ecosystem. The current estimated population is approximately 100 animals. Traffic accidents on the island and loss of habitat could reduce the number to less than 100.
Conservation efforts are being actively carried out
Iriomote wildcat is frequently killed in traffic accidents on the roads of Iriomote Island
In order to protect the Iriomote wildcat, various efforts are being made in Iriomote Island. Among them, the most representative ones are countermeasures against traffic accidents and publicity in the island.
Not only road signs and mobile warning signs are installed at spots where Iriomote wildcat is likely to appear, but also "Iriomote wildcat driving caution map" is published every month, which is made based on the sighting information received from inside and outside of the island.
A wide variety of other innovations are also in place, including a tunnel for animals called an underpass under the road and a single-slope gutter that makes it difficult for animals to enter the road.
