Local Guide FAQ

What do you recommend (places, experiences, food) in the Aomori area?

After all, it is the Oirase mountain stream! Among the many places of interest, we recommend the "moss stairway" located a few minutes upstream from the Shirogane no nagare (Shirogane stream). There are 300 varieties of mosses growing in the Oirase forest in the Oirase Stream. The artificially created stairs covered with moss and plants are colorful and breathtaking. Climbing the stairs, one can see the mountain stream from above. The moss-covered rocks on the left are a perfect spot for observing moss.

Please sneak in some hole-in-the-wall places that you know because you live there.

Yunodai Kogen is located about 15 minutes by car from the hotel in the direction of Hakkoda. The surrounding area is used as pastureland, so there is a wide expanse of green grassland from which one can enjoy a panoramic view of Mount Hakkoda. Also, at night, the beautiful Milky Way can be seen, making it a great place for star lovers. (Occasionally, you will hear mooing from the dark night, but it is a pasture area and there are cows. Please don't be surprised.)

Where did you travel to last year and with whom?

I went to Tokyo and Chiba on a solo trip. The purpose of the trip was to see a Tohoku photo exhibition that was being held at Taro Okamoto's studio. The photos gave me a glimpse into a deep aspect of Tohoku culture that even the locals did not know.
Since I was there, I also went to the National Museum of Japanese History in Chiba. It was a satisfying trip for me, a lover of culture and folklore, as I spent half a day experiencing Japanese history and people's way of life. It was also a good memory for me to draw a "bad luck" omikujiji at Senso-ji temple early in the morning.

What do you do on your days off?

On my way home from shopping, I stop by a public bath to relax. Aomori Prefecture has the largest number of public bathhouses in Japan. There are sento everywhere, so there are countless sento that I have yet to visit. I am currently exploring sento. The public rest areas in sento are very relaxing. Since the locals gather there, I feel at home with the casual greetings and conversations with the Staff/staff members and customers.

Is there anything you always take with you on a trip?

Camera. I originally loved taking pictures of the sky and landscapes, but I only had a compact digital camera. When I joined the company, there were many camera enthusiasts around me, and because of their influence, I bought a single-lens reflex camera for the first time in my life. Although I still can't take good pictures, I always take it with me when I travel, taking pictures of landscapes that are unique to the area, and soaking up the memories after the trip.
