One of Osaka’s most iconic culinary delights is the “pork bun” from 551 Horai. Made with a slightly sweet, chewy dough, these buns are hand-wrapped with a filling of only pork and onions, then steamed to perfection. They have garnered a large following nationwide.
The founder, who came to Japan from Taiwan with the desire to work in the food industry, opened a diner in Namba in 1945 (Showa 20) serving dishes such as curry rice. The following year, he began selling pork buns—an adaptation of Taiwanese “pork mantou” tailored to suit the tastes of Osaka customers.Driven by the belief that “freshly made is the best,” the company has prioritized freshness above all else since its founding. Dough and fillings, mixed at the central kitchen in Osaka City, are delivered to each store in approximately four batches per day. Stores that serve many customers traveling from afar—such as those near Shinkansen stations and airports—also sell chilled products.

This Western-style pastry shop is also known for sparking the roll cake craze. The “Dojima Roll”—made with a moist, fluffy cake wrapped around a generous amount of cream—is the shop’s signature item. The shop’s signature feature is its original cream made with fresh milk from Hokkaido. Drawing on the founder’s unique perspective—someone who isn’t a trained pastry chef and isn’t even a big fan of cream—he came up with a novel idea: a cream that’s rich yet light on the palate, with an aftertaste so fresh it feels like you’re eating raw milk straight from the source.
The shop opened with the desire to “spread a rich lifestyle in Japan where sweets are as much a part of daily life as they are in Europe.”To maintain quality, the shop avoids mass production and pre-made batches, and is located close to the kitchen. The cream, prepared with careful attention to temperature, humidity, and air circulation, is made in small batches only as needed by the pastry chefs.

They’re bite-sized and easy to eat, and simple to cook. Since these are fresh gyoza—not frozen—you can enjoy the taste of freshly made gyoza

“Hito-kuchi Gyoza” was born from the founder’s love of gyoza and his desire to “elevate the status of gyoza, which is often seen as an inexpensive and delicious everyday food.” The star ingredient—Chinese chives—is harvested fresh each morning by contract farmers in Kochi Prefecture. They are characterized by their high water content, thick leaves, and crisp, crunchy texture. The gyoza wrappers are so thin they’re almost translucent, offering a crispy texture. With the subtle flavor of sesame oil and a hint of spicy ichimi chili pepper as a secret ingredient, once you start eating them, you won’t be able to put your chopsticks down.
We’ve also paid special attention to the packaging: the gyoza come in a box wrapped in a deep blue paper—a color that was rare for food packaging when the product was first launched. With their great taste and attractive appearance, these gyoza make the perfect gift for those who value human connections. In addition to pan-fried gyoza, there are many ways to enjoy them—such as deep-fried, boiled, and steamed—so please try out various preparation methods.
